Freight from Turkey to Italy: Road, Sea and Air
Italy is the benchmark ro-ro market from Turkey: trailers sail from the Marmara coast to Trieste and drive on across the north. SMETRD arranges freight from Istanbul to Italy by road, sea and air and sets out the routes, permit constraints and customs steps behind each option.
Turkey to Italy freight forwarder: what SMETRD handles
SMETRD organises transport from Istanbul and other Turkish locations to Italian warehouses and factories: truckloads, ro-ro trailers, containers and air cargo, with the invoice, transport and customs documents prepared for both ends. One plan covers pickup, the Adriatic or Balkan leg and delivery.
Italy and Turkey trade intensively in textiles, machinery parts, steel and plastics. Because trailer permits for Turkish carriers are scarce, forwarders on this lane regularly mix sea and road rather than driving the full distance.
Shipping from Turkey to Italy: which mode fits your cargo?
Ro-ro to Trieste suits trailer loads and palletised goods, containers to Genoa or La Spezia suit heavy and high-volume cargo, a Balkan truck suits direct deliveries with no sailing fixed, and air to Milan or Rome suits urgent, valuable consignments. Compare lead time with the sailing schedule.
Northern Italian industry sits close to Trieste, which is why that port is so heavily used. For central and southern Italy, a Bari, Ancona or Genoa routing can shorten the final haul, depending on the delivery address.
Ro-ro Turkey to Trieste: the standard route into Italy
Trailers sail from Pendik, Ambarlı, Yalova or Mersin to Trieste on services run by U.N. Ro-Ro, Grimaldi and MSC, and then drive to the Italian destination. U.N. Ro-Ro has extended its Trieste contract to 2041. Sailing takes about three to four days plus loading.
Treat frequencies and port pairs as subject to change. Our sources for current ro-ro timetables are dated, so SMETRD confirms each departure with the operator before promising a delivery day.
Road freight Turkey to Italy via the Balkans
The overland road goes from Istanbul through Kapıkule into Bulgaria and Serbia, crosses Croatia and Slovenia, and enters Italy near Trieste at Fernetti or Rabuiese. Crossings include Batrovci–Bajakovo, Obrezje–Bregana and the open Schengen border between Slovenia and Italy.
A planning range is four to six days for a full truckload on this route, an estimate that excludes queues. A Greece variant uses İpsala–Kipoi, a ferry from Igoumenitsa or Patras to Ancona, Bari, Brindisi or Venice and onward road.
Brenner, Tarvisio and Italian truck restrictions
Loads for northern Italy that come through Austria use the Brenner Pass or Tarvisio, where Tyrolean sectoral and night driving bans and a slot system can change timing. Italy also bans heavy trucks on weekends and holidays and sets summer limits, but we have not verified the hours.
Check the current ban calendar before fixing a pickup day. A trailer that reaches Trieste by ship and then drives only inside Italy avoids the Austrian restrictions entirely, which is one reason ro-ro is popular.
Haulier permits for Turkey–Italy road transport
The bilateral road agreement between Turkey and Italy limits permits, and the number available is a known constraint that pushes Turkish carriers towards ro-ro to Trieste. Transit permits may also be needed for Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia or Austria, depending on the route chosen.
We have not confirmed the 2026 quota. Tell us your volume per month; permit supply shapes whether we propose a through-truck, a trailer on a ro-ro ship or a container.
Sea freight Turkey to Italy: Genoa, La Spezia, Trieste and Venice
Genoa is Italy's largest container port, with La Spezia next to it, and both take Turkish cargo on direct and transshipped services. Trieste handles ro-ro and rail onwards to Central Europe, Venice serves the north-east, and Gioia Tauro is a southern transshipment hub.
Container planning range to Genoa or La Spezia is five to ten days port to port, an estimate that depends on whether the sailing is direct. Ask for the specific carrier and cut-off before you commit to a delivery date.
Adriatic ports: Ancona, Bari, Brindisi
Ancona links to Greece and Croatia, and a U.N. Ro-Ro listing mentions Yalova to Bari. A Brindisi ro-ro line was explored by Turkish operators in 2018, but we have not confirmed that it runs. For southern Italy, these ports can shorten the last leg compared with Trieste.
- Ancona: Adriatic ro-ro, Greece and Croatia links
- Bari: possible Yalova service, to be confirmed
- Brindisi: planned line, operation unconfirmed
- Venice: north Adriatic port, earlier ro-ro discussions
Air freight Turkey to Italy: Malpensa, Fiumicino, Bergamo and Venice
Milan Malpensa (MXP) is Italy's largest cargo airport and the usual choice for northern industry, Rome Fiumicino (FCO) covers the centre, Bergamo (BGY) is an express hub and Venice (VCE) serves the north-east. Charges follow chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric.
Turkish Cargo flies to Milan and Rome, but we have not verified frequency or capacity. A transit of one to three days is a planning estimate; allow time for security screening and customs release.
Customs clearance in Italy on goods from Turkey
Imports are declared to the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli through its AIDA system by the importer or a customs agent, using the EORI number, invoice, packing list and transport document. Goods can also move under transit and be cleared at an inland customs office.
Share the tariff code, customs value and origin with the Italian agent before the trailer sails. Exporters in Italy may have a deferral option for import VAT known as plafond, which the agent can explain.
Customs duty, A.TR and EUR.1 for Italy
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union need an A.TR certificate to enter Italy without duty; ECSC steel and some agricultural goods use EUR.1 instead. Since 1 July 2026 steel imports also face an EU quota and a 50 percent out-of-quota duty.
Turkey has long been a major steel supplier to Italy, so allocations matter commercially, yet we have not confirmed Turkey's quota. Check the tariff code first, then pick the certificate.
Documents for a Turkey to Italy shipment
A standard file has the commercial invoice, packing list, transport document (CMR, bill of lading or air waybill) and A.TR or EUR.1 where needed. The importer needs an EORI number, and chemicals, plastics and paints may require safety data sheets and conformity papers.
- Commercial invoice with tariff code and Incoterm
- Packing list
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR or EUR.1
- EORI number of the Italian importer
- Safety data sheets, ADR documents, mill certificates where relevant
Italian import VAT on goods from Turkey
Import VAT in Italy is charged on the customs value, duty and freight, with a standard rate that we understand to be 22 percent but have not re-verified. Registered importers normally recover it in their VAT return, and plafond status can allow import without paying it up front.
SMETRD does not give tax advice, so confirm the rate and deferral rules with an Italian accountant. Make the freight invoice match the customs value so the declaration is consistent.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Italy take?
Ro-ro to Trieste takes roughly three to four days at sea plus loading, a Balkan road route four to six days, container sailings about five to ten days to Genoa or La Spezia, and air one to three days. All figures are estimates that depend on departure dates.
| Route | Planning range | Main variable |
|---|---|---|
| Ro-ro to Trieste, then road | 3 to 4 days sailing plus loading | Weekly sailing slot |
| Balkan road route | 4 to 6 days | Border queues, permits |
| Container to Genoa or La Spezia | 5 to 10 days | Direct or transshipped |
| Air to Milan or Rome | 1 to 3 days | Capacity |
What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to Italy?
Cost depends on whether you use ro-ro, containers or a through-truck, the pickup and delivery points, trailer or container size, ferry or port charges, Italian tolls, fuel and permit supply. No single rate exists for the lane, so SMETRD quotes on request after seeing the cargo.
A ro-ro quote should show the sailing fare and the Italian road leg separately, so you can compare it with a direct truck. Seasonal demand around holidays affects ferry space.
Incoterms and cargo insurance on the Italy lane
FCA and DAP are practical for regular Turkey–Italy trailer traffic: the seller handles Turkish export formalities and the buyer handles Italian clearance. CIF and CIP exist for sea and mixed transport but require insurance, so state the insured value in the order.
Sea legs and trailer loading on ships bring different handling risks than a straight road trip. Cargo insurance is separate from the carrier's CMR liability, which is capped.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Italy
SMETRD trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For Italian buyers, steel is covered by the EU quota system and CBAM rules for importers above 50 tonnes a year, while chemicals and paint need REACH and CLP data, ADR for road transport and packaging contributions to be checked.
See the wholesale trade page for the product groups and offer process, then add the freight so the delivered price to your Italian site is one document.

Frequently asked questions
Why do so many Turkish trucks go to Italy by ship?
Road permits between Turkey and Italy are limited, and ro-ro to Trieste replaces several Balkan border crossings with one sailing. Trailers then drive inside Italy, which is simpler to plan.
Which Italian port should my trailer use?
Trieste is the default for northern Italy. Bari, Ancona or Genoa can suit other regions, depending on service availability. Give us the delivery address and we compare routings.
Can I ship a single pallet from Turkey to Italy?
Yes, groupage lets you book pallets rather than a whole trailer. Departures follow a schedule, and transit is slightly slower than a dedicated truck.
Do Brenner restrictions affect my goods?
If the route passes through Austria, Tyrolean bans and slot rules may apply. A ro-ro route to Trieste avoids the Austrian leg. We have not verified current ban details, so we check them per booking.
Is steel from Turkey still shipped to Italy?
Yes, but under the EU quota system in force since 1 July 2026, with a 50 percent out-of-quota duty and melt-and-pour evidence. We have not confirmed Turkey's allocation, so check quota availability first.
Which documents does an Italian customs agent ask for?
The commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, A.TR or EUR.1 where applicable and the importer's EORI number. For chemicals and paint, add safety data sheets.
