Road freight from Turkey to Europe: FTL, groupage and special loads
SMETRD arranges international road freight from Istanbul and other Turkish locations to European destinations, as full truckloads and as groupage. This page covers truck types, border crossings, CMR and transit paperwork and the factors that decide the price, so you can brief a quote properly.
Road freight from Turkey to Europe
Road freight moves goods by truck from a Turkish pickup address to a European delivery address without transshipment. It is the most used mode between Turkey and Europe because it is flexible, covers any address and fits both full trailers and small pallet consignments, with predictable departures from Istanbul.
The Turkish and European road networks connect through Bulgaria, Greece and, for some routes, ferry links to Italy, so almost every European capital can be reached by one continuous truck journey.
What is international road freight?
International road freight is the carriage of goods by commercial vehicle across at least one national border under a single consignment note, the CMR. The carrier is responsible for the cargo from taking over to delivery, while export and import customs formalities are completed at the relevant border points.
For Turkey, this means leaving the Turkish customs territory, crossing the EU external border and, depending on the procedure, being cleared at the border or at an inland destination office.
FTL vs LTL: which is right for my cargo?
Choose FTL when your cargo fills most of a trailer, is time-sensitive or fragile, or needs a sealed single-shipper load. Choose LTL when you ship a few pallets and accept a scheduled consolidated departure. The break-even point depends on the route, but around ten pallets is where many shippers start comparing.
A standard trailer carries about 33 euro pallets and roughly 24 tonnes. LTL is billed on pallet places, weight or loading metres, whichever is greater.
Groupage and part load from Turkey
Groupage, also called part load or LTL, combines pallets from several shippers on one truck. SMETRD books space on scheduled consolidated departures from Istanbul to European hubs and onward delivery. It suits regular small volumes where a dedicated truck would run mostly empty.
Departures follow a timetable, so cut-off times for pickup and documents matter. Goods are loaded and unloaded at a terminal, which makes sturdy packaging and clear labelling essential.
How long does road freight from Turkey to Europe take?
A full truckload from Istanbul usually needs about four to six days to Central Europe and longer for Western and Northern Europe, while groupage adds a few days for consolidation. These are planning ranges only. Border queues, driver rest times, weekend bans and customs checks can all extend them.
The confirmed transit time is given per shipment, with the pickup date and the route used, rather than as a general promise.
Main routes and border crossings from Turkey
Most trucks leave Turkey at Kapıkule or Hamzabeyli into Bulgaria, then take the Balkan corridor towards Serbia, Hungary and Austria or the Romanian route towards Hungary and Poland. Routes to Greece use the Ipsala crossing. Italian traffic often combines road with a ro-ro ferry.
Border waiting time at the Turkish-Bulgarian crossings is the main uncertainty and varies strongly by day and season. Alternative crossings are used when queues become excessive.
| Route | Typical crossing | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Via Bulgaria and Romania | Kapıkule or Hamzabeyli | Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Baltics |
| Via Bulgaria and Serbia | Kapıkule | Austria, Germany, Western Europe |
| Via Greece | Ipsala | Greece, Italian ferry links |
| Ro-ro to Italy | Turkish port plus sea leg | Italy, France, Spain |
Truck types: tautliner, box, reefer, mega and flatbed
A tautliner has curtain sides for easy side loading, a box trailer is closed and rigid, a reefer is refrigerated, a mega trailer has extra internal height for volume cargo and a flatbed carries steel or machinery. The right type depends on cargo shape, loading method and weather protection needs.
State the loading method in the request: side, rear or top loading, and whether a forklift or crane is available at either end.
ADR dangerous goods by road
Dangerous goods by road fall under the ADR agreement, which sets classification, packaging, labelling, vehicle equipment and driver training requirements. Typical Turkish exports in this category are certain chemicals, paints and solvents. A correct safety data sheet and UN number must be known before booking.
Not every haulier holds ADR-trained drivers or equipped vehicles, so ADR shipments are booked with approved carriers only.
Temperature-controlled transport
Temperature-controlled road transport uses reefer trailers that keep a set temperature range during the journey. It is needed for food, certain chemicals and some adhesives or coatings. The required range, pre-cooling and the data logger requirement should be stated at quote stage.
Reefer capacity is tighter than standard trailers, so plan earlier in busy seasons and confirm the temperature at loading.
Oversize and heavy load transport
Oversize or heavy loads need special trailers such as low loaders or extendable flatbeds and, in most countries, transport permits and route approval. Escort vehicles may be required. Lead times are longer, so send exact dimensions and weight, including the lifting points, at the start.
Machinery, large steel structures and coils with unusual packaging are typical examples. Permit rules differ for each transit country.
CMR consignment note explained
The CMR is the consignment note used for international road freight under the CMR convention. It names sender, carrier and consignee, describes the goods and serves as proof of the transport contract and receipt. It is issued in several copies, one each for the sender, the consignee and the carrier.
Check the goods description, weight, package count and delivery address before signing, because liability limits and claims rely on what is written on the CMR.
Transit (T1) and TIR carnet
A T1 transit declaration allows goods to move under customs supervision through several countries without paying duty at each border. A TIR carnet works similarly under the TIR convention with an international guarantee. Which one applies depends on the route, the carrier and where the goods will be cleared.
The declaration must be closed at the office of destination within the time allowed, otherwise a duty claim can arise against the guarantor.
Customs clearance for road shipments
Road shipments from Turkey are cleared for export at a Turkish customs office, cross the EU external border with a transit or import declaration and are cleared for import either at the border or at the destination. A customs agent lodges the declaration with the commercial invoice and the CMR.
Mistakes in the HS code, customs value or origin cause most delays. These items should be agreed with the supplier and the importer before the truck is loaded.
Permits and ECMT quotas
Turkish hauliers need bilateral or multilateral transport permits for many European countries, and ECMT permits are limited in number. Their availability influences which carrier can run a given route and at what price. Ask the carrier whether a permit is available for your route and date.
Permit regimes change between years and have not been confirmed here for 2026, so SMETRD checks the current situation when preparing each quote.
Driver rules, rest times and delays at borders
European driving time rules limit daily and weekly driving and require breaks and rest periods, recorded by the tachograph. These rules shape the realistic transit time as much as distance does. Long waits at borders, weekend and holiday truck bans and inspections add further delay.
Teams of two drivers shorten transit on long routes, usually at a higher rate.
Cargo insurance: CMR liability vs all-risk
Carrier liability under CMR is limited per kilogram of gross weight and applies only if the carrier is at fault within defined limits. All-risk cargo insurance covers the invoice value and a broader range of damage and loss. For valuable goods, take insurance in addition to CMR cover.
State the commercial invoice value when requesting the quote so insurance can be priced at the same time.
Cost factors for road freight from Turkey
Road freight prices depend on distance, truck type, weight and loading metres, urgency, border crossings, tolls and fuel, empty return leg and season. Special requirements such as ADR, reefer or oversize add cost. Because these vary daily, SMETRD gives a quote on request instead of a list price.
- Route and distance
- Truck type and load factor
- ADR, reefer or oversize needs
- Season and border waiting time
- Insurance and customs services
Road freight for steel, plastic, chemicals and paint
Steel travels best on flatbed or tautliner with proper lashing, plastic granules in bags or big bags on box trailers, and chemicals and paint in drums or IBCs, sometimes under ADR. Weight limits and axle loads matter for dense cargo, so the loading plan should be agreed in advance.
Product groups sold by SMETRD can be delivered under one combined offer.
Which countries do we serve by road?
SMETRD arranges road freight from Turkey to all 43 destinations in its network, including Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Romania and Hungary. The United Kingdom, Ireland and Iceland involve a sea or tunnel crossing, which is planned as part of the road route.
How to request a road freight quote
Email [email protected] with the pickup and delivery addresses, goods description, number and size of pallets or packages, weight, preferred loading date, Incoterm and any special requirement. Include the HS code and the invoice value if you want customs and insurance included in the same quote.
Frequently asked questions
What does FTL mean in road freight?
FTL means full truck load. The whole trailer is booked for one shipper, which is faster and safer for sensitive cargo. A standard trailer takes about 33 pallets or roughly 24 tonnes.
How long does a truck from Istanbul take to Germany?
As a planning range, a full truckload takes roughly four to seven days, depending on the route, border waiting time and driver rest periods. The confirmed time is stated in the quote.
Which border crossings do trucks use leaving Turkey?
Mainly Kapıkule and Hamzabeyli into Bulgaria, and Ipsala into Greece. The crossing chosen depends on the destination and the current waiting time.
How many copies of the CMR consignment note are issued?
The CMR is normally made out in three original copies: one for the sender, one that travels with the goods to the consignee and one for the carrier.
Can SMETRD transport dangerous goods by road?
Yes, ADR shipments can be arranged with approved carriers. The UN number, class, packaging and safety data sheet must be provided before booking.
Is groupage slower than a full truck?
Usually yes, by a few days, because pallets are consolidated and departures are scheduled. It costs less per pallet for small volumes.
