Freight forwarder Turkey to Poland: road, sea and air
SMETRD arranges road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to Poland. This page explains the main routes, ports and airports, the customs paperwork for goods moving from Turkey into the EU, and what drives the price of a shipment, so you can choose the right mode before asking for a quote.
Freight forwarder Turkey to Poland: what we handle
A freight forwarder plans and books the transport, prepares the shipping documents and coordinates customs on both sides. For Turkey to Poland, SMETRD handles full truckloads, groupage, containers by sea and air cargo, and passes the transit and customs steps to you as one clear plan.
Poland is one of the largest road destinations in Central Europe, and most goods from Turkey arrive by truck through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. Sea and air are used when volume, urgency or cargo type make them a better fit.
Shipping from Turkey to Poland: which mode fits your cargo?
Road suits most pallets, machinery parts and full truckloads because it runs door to door without transshipment. Sea suits heavy or bulky goods that are not urgent. Air suits small, valuable or time-critical consignments. The right choice depends on weight, volume, deadline and the delivery address.
A common pattern is road for regular supply, sea containers for large steel or plastic volumes into Gdańsk or Gdynia, and air for samples and spare parts.
Road freight Turkey to Poland: routes and border crossings
Trucks leave Istanbul through the Turkish–Bulgarian border at Kapıkule or Hamzabeyli, cross Bulgaria and Romania, continue through Hungary and Slovakia and enter Poland, usually towards Katowice, Kraków or Warsaw. Only the exit from Turkey and entry to the EU involve routine border checks.
Inside the Schengen area, the crossings between Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland have no routine goods checks, but vehicles can still be inspected on the road. Waiting times at Kapıkule vary during the day and can change quickly in peak weeks.
FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to Poland
A full truckload (FTL) books the whole trailer for one shipper, typically around 33 pallets or about 24 tonnes. Groupage, also called LTL or part load, combines several shippers on one truck, so you pay for the space you use but accept a slower, scheduled departure.
FTL is faster and safer for sensitive cargo because the trailer is sealed once. Groupage is cheaper per pallet for small volumes and works well for regular weekly shipments to Polish distributors.
Sea freight Turkey to Poland: ports of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Szczecin
The main Polish container gateway is Gdańsk, with Gdynia as a second option and Szczecin–Świnoujście used for ferry and bulk traffic. Most Turkish cargo reaches these ports with a transshipment at a hub such as Piraeus, Rotterdam or Hamburg rather than on a direct sailing.
Origin ports in Turkey include Ambarlı, Gebze, İzmit, Tekirdağ and Mersin. Sea transit to Poland is generally slower than road, so sea is mainly used for heavy goods and larger container volumes.
Container shipping Turkey to Poland (FCL and LCL)
A full container load (FCL) fills a 20 ft or 40 ft container for one shipper. A less than container load (LCL) shares a container and is consolidated at the origin port. FCL is cheaper per unit once you pass a certain volume, while LCL suits smaller consignments.
Ask for the container type in advance: standard dry, high cube or open top. Port handling, inland haulage from Gdańsk or Gdynia to the final address and the container return rules should be part of the same quotation.
Air freight Turkey to Poland: airports and typical use
Air cargo from Istanbul reaches Warsaw Chopin (WAW) on belly capacity of passenger flights, and Katowice (KTW), Kraków and Gdańsk handle further cargo. Air freight is billed on chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so packaging size matters as much as weight.
Use air for samples, spare parts, high-value goods and urgent replenishment. For dangerous goods and temperature-controlled cargo, check the airline's acceptance rules before booking.
Customs clearance Turkey to Poland
Goods from Turkey entering Poland need an import declaration lodged with Polish customs, normally through the electronic PUESC system, supported by the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. Either the consignee's customs agent or SMETRD's partner broker can lodge the declaration.
Both parties should have an EORI number. Errors in the HS code, the customs value or the origin statement are the most frequent reasons for delay, so these details should be agreed before the truck or container leaves.
EU–Turkey customs union: do you pay duty on goods from Turkey?
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union can generally enter the EU without customs duty when the correct origin or circulation proof is provided. Agricultural products and steel follow separate rules, and EU trade-defence measures can still apply to specific steel products.
Steel imports in particular are subject to a separate EU regime from 1 July 2026, including quotas and a melt-and-pour requirement. Check the product's tariff code and current measures before you commit to a purchase price.
Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Poland
The core set is a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document: CMR for road, bill of lading for sea or air waybill for air. Depending on the goods you may also need an A.TR or EUR.1 certificate, a T1 or EAD transit document and product certificates.
- Commercial invoice with HS codes, value and Incoterm
- Packing list with weights and package counts
- CMR (road), bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
- A.TR or EUR.1 where applicable
- T1 / EAD transit document when goods travel under transit
- Mill, safety or conformity certificates for steel, chemicals and paint
A.TR and EUR.1 movement certificates for Poland
The A.TR movement certificate proves that industrial goods are in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union and supports duty-free entry. EUR.1 is used for goods covered by preferential agreements, including some agricultural and steel products. Which certificate is needed depends on the product category.
Exporters in Turkey normally obtain the certificate from the customs authority or an authorised body before departure. Confirm the right certificate with your broker for each tariff code, because the wrong form can lead to duty being charged.
T1 transit document Turkey to Poland
A T1 transit declaration lets non-EU goods travel across several countries under customs supervision without paying duty at each border. It is closed at the destination customs office, so the goods must reach the declared place on time, and the guarantee covering the transit must remain valid.
For Turkey to Poland by road, T1 or the NCTS electronic procedure is used when the goods are cleared at destination rather than at the EU entry point. The route and customs office of destination are named in the declaration.
Import VAT in Poland on goods from Turkey
Imports into Poland are subject to import VAT, whose standard rate is 23 percent. The importer settles it with customs or, if registered and eligible, through the VAT return. The consignee should confirm its Polish VAT status with a tax adviser before the first shipment.
SMETRD does not give tax advice. Duty, VAT and any excise are calculated on the customs value, which includes freight and insurance to the EU border, so the transport invoice matters for the declaration.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Poland take?
Planning ranges are about four to six days for a full truckload by road, a week to several weeks by sea depending on direct or transshipped routing, and one to three days by air. Border queues, vehicle bans, port congestion and customs checks can move these times.
These are indicative figures, not guarantees. SMETRD states the expected transit time for each shipment when it confirms the route, mode and departure date.
What affects freight rates Turkey to Poland?
The main price drivers are the mode, the weight and volume, the pickup and delivery points, how urgent the shipment is and the cargo type. Fuel, tolls, border waiting time, port charges and seasonal capacity also move rates, so a single standard rate for Turkey to Poland does not exist.
SMETRD quotes on request. Send the pickup and delivery address, goods description, weight, dimensions and the preferred Incoterm, and a quote follows for the mode you choose.
Incoterms for Turkey to Poland shipments
Incoterms 2020 split costs and risk between seller and buyer. EXW puts almost everything on the buyer, FCA and DAP are common for road freight, and DDP puts delivery, duty and import clearance on the seller. Agree the term in the contract before the transport is booked.
For Poland, DAP and FCA are the most practical choices for regular road traffic, because the seller handles Turkish export formalities and the buyer controls Polish import clearance.
Polish road rules: tolls, truck bans and permits
Poland charges distance-based tolls on motorways and expressways for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, restricts heavy trucks on Sundays and holidays, and checks tachographs and driver rules closely. Turkish hauliers also work under bilateral permit rules, so availability of permits can affect planning.
Check current permit quotas, toll registration and the exact truck-ban hours with the carrier before booking, because these details change and have not been confirmed here for 2026.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Poland
SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For Polish buyers, these goods need extra paperwork: mill certificates for steel, REACH and safety data sheets in Polish for chemicals and paint, and ADR rules where goods are classed as dangerous.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Poland?
A customs declaration is mandatory, but you can lodge it yourself through the PUESC system if you have an EORI number and the knowledge. Most importers use a customs agent, because errors in the HS code or value cause delays.
Is there a direct Ro-Ro or ferry from Turkey to Poland?
We have not verified a regular direct Ro-Ro service between Turkey and Poland. Road is the usual option for trucks, and Ro-Ro to Italy followed by road is an alternative.
Can I ship less than a full truck from Turkey to Poland?
Yes. Groupage (LTL) lets you book individual pallets or part of a trailer. Departures follow a schedule, and transit is a little slower than a dedicated full truckload.
Is the cargo insured?
Carrier liability under the CMR convention is limited, so a separate cargo insurance policy is advisable for valuable goods. Ask for insurance when you request the quote.
Can I track my shipment from Turkey to Poland?
Road shipments are normally tracked through the carrier's vehicle or milestone updates. Containers are tracked by container number, and air cargo by air waybill number.
Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to Poland?
Dangerous goods, certain chemicals, food and animal products, weapons and goods under EU sanctions or trade-defence measures have special rules. Tell us the goods and HS code before booking.
