Freight forwarder Turkey to Lithuania: road, sea and air
SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to Lithuania. Most Turkish cargo reaches Lithuania by truck through Poland, while the port of Klaipėda mainly serves the Baltic Sea. This page covers the routes, the border crossings, the customs steps and the documents behind a Lithuanian delivery.
Freight forwarder Turkey to Lithuania: what a quotation covers
A forwarder books the transport, prepares the shipping papers and coordinates customs. For Turkey to Lithuania, SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul and shows the route through Poland, the point of customs clearance and the documents the Lithuanian consignee will need.
Lithuania is an EU and Schengen member and uses the euro. Its customs authority is the Lithuanian Customs service.
Shipping from Turkey to Lithuania: choosing between modes
Road through Poland is the fastest regular option for pallets and trailers. Sea is slower, almost always transshipped and best for large containers with flexible dates. Air freight from Istanbul to Vilnius or Kaunas fits small, urgent or high-value consignments, usually through Turkish Airlines belly space or a European hub.
For time-sensitive cargo, road via Poland is generally faster than the sea route to Klaipėda.
Road freight Turkey to Lithuania: Via Carpathia and Via Baltica
Trucks leave Istanbul by Kapıkule, cross Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, and enter Poland on the Via Carpathia axis. They then follow the E67 Via Baltica to Kaunas and Vilnius, or run through Warsaw. Planning for the journey is five to seven days before border queues.
Alternatives pass through Czechia on the way to Warsaw. The last EU-internal crossing, from Poland at Budzisko into Lithuania at Kalvarija, has no routine checks.
Border crossings between Turkey and Lithuania
The only external border is Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo, with Hamzabeyli–Lesovo as a second option. After that, Bulgaria to Romania runs through Ruse–Giurgiu or Vidin–Calafat, and the Schengen frontiers to Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Lithuania have no routine goods checks, although trucks can still be stopped on the road.
Customs transit under T1 or NCTS is closed at the Lithuanian destination, and ICS2 pre-arrival data is lodged for entry into the EU.
FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to Lithuania
A full truckload moves directly from the loading point to the Lithuanian consignee on one seal. Groupage consolidates pallets from several senders, often at a Polish terminal, and then forwards them to Vilnius, Kaunas or Klaipėda. It costs less per pallet but follows fixed weekly departures.
Lithuanian consignees often receive regular groupage deliveries, while FTL is used when a project load or urgent restocking arrives.
Turkish carriers, permits and Lithuanian road charges
Turkish hauliers need bilateral and transit permits for EU countries, and quotas limit the number of trips. Turkish-registered trucks cannot perform cabotage inside the EU. Lithuania charges heavy vehicles a road user fee whose scheme and rates were not verified, and Poland requires e-TOLL registration for tolled roads.
Confirm the current Lithuanian allocation and charges with the carrier before booking, and check Polish Sunday and holiday restrictions for heavy trucks.
Sea freight Turkey to Lithuania: the port of Klaipėda
Klaipėda is Lithuania's only deep-sea port and the largest Ro-Ro hub in the Baltic states, with ferry links to Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Cargo from Turkey normally reaches it through a Mediterranean or North European hub such as Rotterdam, Bremerhaven or Gdańsk, followed by a feeder.
One aggregator lists İzmit to Klaipėda at about twenty-five days with departures every few weeks. This is only a reference, not a schedule.
Ro-Ro and containers into Lithuania
A direct Turkey–Klaipėda Ro-Ro service has not been found. Turkish trailers usually go by road or take a Ro-Ro leg to Italy, then continue overland through Poland. Klaipėda is used for onward Baltic ferries to Trelleborg, Kiel or Karlshamn, not as a gateway from Turkey.
Container shipments should be planned at eighteen to twenty-eight days including transshipment, and the quote should list the inland haul to Vilnius or Kaunas.
Air freight Turkey to Lithuania: Vilnius and Kaunas
Vilnius Airport (VNO) is the national airport with belly cargo and limited freighter use. Kaunas (KUN) is a secondary airport used by express and freighter operators, although its capabilities were not verified. A dedicated freighter from Istanbul is not confirmed, so most cargo moves on passenger aircraft or through a hub.
Expect one to three days. Dangerous goods and temperature-controlled cargo need airline acceptance before booking.
Customs clearance Turkey to Lithuania
Goods need an import declaration in the Lithuanian customs system, supported by the invoice, packing list and transport document. The importer holds an EORI number. Import VAT and duties can be dealt with at the first EU point of entry or at the Lithuanian destination office when the load travels in transit.
Agree HS code, customs value and origin before the truck leaves, because corrections after arrival delay delivery.
Do you pay duty on goods from Turkey to Lithuania?
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union generally pass without customs duty when the A.TR certificate is correct. Steel and some agricultural goods fall under separate agreements and need EUR.1. For steel there are quota and melt-and-pour requirements from July 2026.
Baltic customs look closely at steel traceability and the country of melting. CBAM obligations apply to importers above the threshold.
Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Lithuania
The standard set contains a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document. Add the movement certificate, a T1 or EAD transit document and the single administrative declaration prepared for Lithuanian customs. For steel, add a mill certificate with melt-and-pour information, and for chemicals a safety data sheet.
- Commercial invoice with HS codes and Incoterm
- Packing list with weights
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR or EUR.1 as required
- T1 / EAD transit document
- Mill certificate (EN 10204 3.1) or safety data sheet
Import VAT in Lithuania on goods from Turkey
Lithuania applies import VAT, with a standard rate of 21 percent that should be reconfirmed with the State Tax Inspectorate. The base includes the customs value plus freight and insurance to the EU border. Registered businesses usually offset the VAT on their return, depending on their status.
SMETRD does not give tax advice. A short call with a local tax adviser avoids surprises on the first import.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Lithuania take?
Planning ranges are five to seven days for a full truck, excluding Kapıkule queues, eighteen to twenty-eight days for a container with transshipment, and one to three days by air. These are estimates only. Border waits, truck bans in Poland and port congestion can move the dates.
The quote states the expected time for the chosen route and week.
What affects freight rates Turkey to Lithuania?
Mode, weight, volume, collection and delivery addresses, urgency and cargo type set the rate. Fuel, tolls in Poland and Lithuania, border waiting and return-load availability from the Baltics also matter. There is no single standard rate, so quotes are made per shipment and per delivery point.
Incoterms FCA and DAP are practical for road traffic. Send addresses, goods description, weight and dimensions.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Lithuania
SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. Lithuanian buyers need mill certificates with melt-and-pour data for steel, REACH registration and CLP labels in Lithuanian for chemicals, ADR papers for dangerous goods, and paint within the EU limits for volatile organic compounds.
The wholesale trade page lists the product groups. Goods and transport can be quoted together to the Lithuanian address.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Lithuania?
A declaration is mandatory. An importer with an EORI number can lodge it, but most companies use an agent, since wrong tariff codes or values cause delays.
Is there a direct Ro-Ro from Turkey to Lithuania?
No direct Turkey–Klaipėda Ro-Ro was found. Trailers normally travel by road through Poland or use a Ro-Ro to Italy followed by road.
Can I ship less than a full truck from Turkey to Lithuania?
Yes, as groupage. Pallets are combined with other cargo, consolidated at a hub, and delivered on a scheduled departure.
Is the cargo insured?
CMR liability is limited, so separate cargo insurance is advisable for valuable goods. Request it with the quote.
Can I track my shipment from Turkey to Lithuania?
Road loads are followed by carrier milestone updates. Containers use the container number and air cargo the air waybill number.
Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to Lithuania?
Dangerous goods, some chemicals, food and animal products, weapons and goods under EU sanctions or trade-defence measures have special rules. Send the goods and HS code before booking.
