Freight from Turkey to Sweden: Road, Sea and Air
SMETRD arranges road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to Sweden. Sweden lies at the far end of the Turkish road network, past Germany and Denmark, so route choice, ferries and bridge tolls matter as much as distance. This page covers the routes, ports, airports, Swedish customs and the rules most relevant to planning.
Freight from Turkey to Sweden: what SMETRD arranges
SMETRD books full truckloads and groupage from Istanbul to Swedish addresses, containers into Gothenburg and other ports, and air cargo into Stockholm Arlanda. Customs steps are planned with the transport, so the Swedish consignee receives goods with the papers needed for clearance by Swedish Customs, Tullverket.
Sweden has a long north-south geography. A delivery to Malmö, Gothenburg or Stockholm involves different last legs, so the final address should be stated before a route is chosen.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Sweden take?
As a planning range, a full truck takes about six to nine days overland, or six to eight days when Ro-Ro to Trieste is followed by road. A container by sea needs eighteen to thirty days with transshipment, and air cargo one to three days. These are estimates and not guarantees.
Winter weather, ferry schedules and border controls can add time. SMETRD states the expected transit for each shipment when the route and dispatch date are agreed.
Road freight from Turkey to Sweden: the Öresund route
The common route crosses Bulgaria, Serbia or Romania and Hungary, Austria and Germany via Munich, Nuremberg or Hanover to Hamburg, then Flensburg and Padborg into Denmark and the Öresund Bridge to Malmö. From there the E6 and E20 lead to Gothenburg and the E4 to Stockholm.
Alternatives use the ferries from Puttgarden to Rødby or from Rostock and Travemünde to Trelleborg, which save driving but depend on timetables and deck space.
Which border crossing do trucks use from Turkey to Sweden?
Trucks leave Turkey at Kapıkule and enter Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo. Afterwards the borders between Hungary, Austria, Germany and Denmark are inside Schengen, as is the Öresund link between Denmark and Sweden, though temporary controls have been reintroduced at times and the current status should be checked.
On the Serbian variant a non-EU customs transit is added. Inside the EU only the first entry normally involves goods formalities.
FTL and groupage (LTL) from Turkey to Sweden
FTL books a full trailer for one Swedish consignee, which suits steel items, plastic granules and paint in volume. Groupage combines pallets from several shippers and is cheaper for smaller lots, though on a lane this long it runs on a hub-based schedule and takes noticeably more time than a dedicated truck.
Swedish receivers often use booked delivery slots and require advance notification. Provide the contact and receiving hours in the request.
Sea freight from Turkey to Sweden: Gothenburg, Helsingborg, Trelleborg
Gothenburg is Scandinavia's largest port, with container, Ro-Ro and rail shuttle services. Helsingborg and Trelleborg are main Ro-Ro and ferry gateways, Malmö handles vehicles and Ro-Ro, and Stockholm is served through Norvik and Nynäshamn. No direct Turkey–Sweden liner service has been verified, so transshipment is typical.
Containers from Ambarlı, Mersin or Izmir normally transship at Rotterdam, Hamburg or Bremerhaven and continue by feeder to Gothenburg. Ro-Ro to Trieste and a road leg north is the alternative for trailers.
Container shipping Turkey to Sweden (FCL and LCL)
FCL fills a 20 ft or 40 ft container for one shipper, while LCL is consolidated at the Turkish port and shares the box. Because of transshipment, schedules to Sweden are less predictable than on direct lanes. Rail shuttles from Gothenburg can carry the box to inland terminals.
Ask for terminal handling, inland haulage and container return rules in one quotation. Winter conditions can affect the inland leg.
Air freight from Turkey to Sweden: Arlanda, Gothenburg and Copenhagen
Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) is the main air cargo airport, Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) is secondary and Malmö (MMX) has limited cargo, so Copenhagen (CPH) is often used for southern Sweden. Turkish Cargo serves Stockholm, but frequency was not verified. Charges follow chargeable weight.
Air suits samples, spare parts and urgent orders. For Malmö deliveries, a flight to Copenhagen plus trucking across the Öresund can be faster than waiting for space on a Swedish airport.
Which is the best way to ship from Turkey to Sweden?
Road is practical for regular pallet flows, but it is a long lane, so sea or a combined Ro-Ro solution can win for heavy volumes if the schedule allows. Air covers urgent goods. The decision follows weight, urgency and destination in Sweden. Southern Sweden is much closer by road than the north.
For a buyer in Gothenburg, the sea route via a North European hub may match road on time while costing less per tonne. Ask for both quotations.
Do I pay customs duty on goods from Turkey to Sweden?
Sweden is part of the EU–Turkey customs union, so industrial goods in free circulation can enter without customs duty with the right proof. Steel follows a separate arrangement, and since 1 July 2026 an EU quota regime with a higher out-of-quota duty and a melt-and-pour rule applies to many steel imports.
CBAM reporting also applies from 2026. SSAB and other Swedish producers are local competition for steel, so buyers compare certificates and terms closely.
Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Sweden
A commercial invoice, packing list and transport document are the basic set: CMR for road, bill of lading for sea, air waybill for air. The declaration is filed with Tullverket, and pre-arrival (ENS) data is required where applicable. An A.TR or EUR.1 certificate is added according to the goods.
- Commercial invoice with HS codes and Incoterm
- Packing list
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR for industrial goods, EUR.1 for steel
- ENS pre-arrival data
- Certificates and safety data sheets for steel, chemicals and paint
A.TR or EUR.1: which certificate does my cargo need for Sweden?
A.TR proves free-circulation status for industrial goods under the customs union and is the usual form for plastics, chemicals and paint. Steel products fall under a separate arrangement and normally need EUR.1. A.TR is not an origin proof. Check the form per tariff code, because a mixed load can need both.
Confirm the form with the Swedish broker before dispatch. A wrong certificate may lead to duty being assessed on arrival.
Customs clearance and import VAT in Sweden
Goods are cleared at the first EU entry point or moved under T1 transit to a Swedish office and declared with Tullverket. The standard Swedish VAT rate is cited at 25 percent, which was not re-verified. Sweden is outside the euro area, so invoices may be in SEK or another currency.
VAT is applied to the customs value including freight and insurance. SMETRD does not give tax advice, so confirm VAT status with an adviser.
Swedish winter rules, bridge tolls and permits
The Öresund Bridge charges a toll for trucks, and Germany and Denmark apply road-user charges on the way. Winter tyres are required on vehicles in winter conditions between December and March. Non-EU hauliers cannot do cabotage in Sweden. Temporary border controls have been used at times and the current position should be checked.
Turkish trucks need bilateral or CEMT permits for Sweden plus transit permits for the countries on the way. 2026 quotas were not confirmed.
What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to Sweden?
Mode, weight, volume, pickup and delivery points, urgency and cargo type set the price. The long distance, bridge and road charges, ferry capacity, permits, transshipment fees and seasonal capacity add variation. There is no standard rate, so SMETRD quotes each shipment on request.
Deliveries to northern Sweden cost more than to Malmö or Gothenburg. State the exact address to avoid surprises.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Sweden
SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. Swedish buyers need mill certificates for steel, REACH and CLP documents with safety data sheets for chemicals and paint, VOC compliance for coatings and ADR papers. The Swedish Chemicals Agency keeps a product register for certain chemicals.
Product register details were not verified. Combine the goods and the transport in one request to get a delivered price.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Sweden?
A declaration to Tullverket is required, and most importers use an agent. You need an EORI number either way.
Is there a direct sea service from Turkey to Sweden?
We have not verified a direct liner. Transshipment at a North European hub, or Ro-Ro to Trieste plus road, is typical.
Can I ship a few pallets from Turkey to Sweden?
Yes, as groupage. On a lane this long the departures are scheduled and transit is slower than a full truck.
Should cargo to Sweden be insured?
CMR liability is limited and the lane is long, so a separate cargo policy is advisable. Ask for it with the quote.
Can I track a shipment to Sweden?
Road cargo is followed through carrier updates, containers by number and air cargo by waybill.
Which goods need extra checks for Sweden?
Dangerous goods, certain chemicals, food and animal products and steel under EU measures. Share the goods and HS code before booking.
