Freight forwarder Turkey to Denmark: what SMETRD arranges

A freight forwarder plans the transport, books the carrier, prepares the shipping documents and coordinates customs. For Turkey to Denmark, SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul and explains the route, the paperwork and the EU import steps before you commit to a mode.

Denmark belongs to the EU and the Schengen area. The Danish krone is pegged to the euro, but the country stays outside the euro area, so local invoices may be in DKK.

Shipping from Turkey to Denmark: which mode fits your cargo?

Road is the default for pallets and full trailers because it reaches Jutland, Funen and Zealand without port handling. Sea suits heavy or bulky cargo that is not urgent and usually runs through a North Sea hub. Air suits samples, spare parts and urgent replenishment into Copenhagen or Billund.

Denmark is far from Istanbul, so the gap between road and sea is smaller than on shorter lanes. Compare door-to-door time, not only the main leg.

Road freight Turkey to Denmark: route via Padborg

A truck leaves Istanbul for Kapıkule and Kapitan Andreevo, then crosses Bulgaria, Serbia or Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany. It passes Hamburg and Flensburg and enters Denmark at Padborg, where the E45 leads to Kolding, Odense and Copenhagen. The distance is roughly 3,300 to 3,600 km.

An alternative runs through Romania, Hungary and Czechia towards Berlin and the German Baltic coast. Zealand can be reached over the Great Belt and Øresund bridges or by the Puttgarden–Rødby ferry; the bridges charge separate tolls.

FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to Denmark

A full truckload books the whole trailer for one shipper and is sealed once at loading, which suits fragile or high-value cargo. Groupage combines several consignments on one truck, so you pay for the space used but accept a fixed consolidation schedule and extra handling in Germany or at a Danish terminal.

For regular shipments to Danish distributors, many buyers combine a weekly groupage slot with an occasional FTL when volume rises. Ask for loading metres, not only pallet counts.

Sea freight Turkey to Denmark: Aarhus, Copenhagen and Fredericia

Aarhus is Denmark's largest container port, Copenhagen-Malmö handles Ro-Ro and general cargo, Fredericia is rail-linked and Esbjerg serves the North Sea. Turkish cargo normally reaches them through a transshipment at Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg or Bremerhaven, with a feeder to Aarhus as the last leg.

Direct Mediterranean-to-Aarhus services are not assumed. Origin ports in Turkey include Ambarlı, Mersin and İzmir; the full routing should appear in the quotation.

Ro-Ro and container options Turkey to Denmark

A direct Turkey–Denmark Ro-Ro line has not been confirmed. The usual combined route uses a Turkish Ro-Ro leg to Trieste, then road through Austria and Germany, with the Puttgarden–Rødby ferry as a shortcut to Zealand. Containers (FCL or LCL) are the alternative for non-urgent loads.

Container planning should include the inland haul from Aarhus, the return of the empty box and the free time at the terminal, all in the same offer.

Air freight Turkey to Denmark: Copenhagen and Billund

Copenhagen Airport Kastrup is the main cargo airport, and Turkish Airlines flies Istanbul to Copenhagen with belly capacity. Billund serves Jutland and courier operations; Aarhus has minor cargo. Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Hamburg with onward trucking are alternatives when direct space is short.

Air is billed on chargeable weight, the higher of actual and volumetric weight. Dangerous goods and temperature-controlled cargo need acceptance by the airline before booking.

Customs clearance Turkey to Denmark

Goods enter the EU customs territory and need an import declaration with Danish customs (Toldstyrelsen), supported by the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. The importer needs an EORI number. A truck entering at Bulgaria often travels under T1 transit and is cleared at the Danish destination office.

Errors in the HS code, customs value or origin statement cause most delays, so agree these details before loading.

Do you pay customs duty on goods from Turkey to Denmark?

Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union generally enter Denmark without customs duty when the proof is correct. Steel and coal follow a separate arrangement, and agricultural goods have their own rules. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are outside the EU customs territory.

Steel imports face the EU regime that applies from July 2026, with quotas and melt-and-pour evidence, and CBAM obligations from the 2026 definitive period. Check the tariff code before fixing a purchase price.

Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Denmark

The core set is a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document: CMR for road, bill of lading for sea or air waybill for air. Depending on the goods you may add a movement certificate, a T1 document, steel mill certificates or safety data sheets.

  • Commercial invoice with HS codes, value and Incoterm
  • Packing list with weights and package counts
  • CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
  • A.TR or EUR.1 where applicable
  • EN 10204 3.1 certificate and melt-and-pour evidence for steel
  • Safety data sheet and ADR papers for chemicals and paint

A.TR, EUR.1 and T1 for Denmark

A.TR proves that industrial goods are in free circulation under the customs union; it does not prove origin. EUR.1 is used for steel and coal products under the separate agreement. A T1 transit declaration lets goods cross several countries under supervision and is closed at the Danish destination office.

Confirm the correct certificate with your broker for each tariff code, because the wrong form can lead to duty being charged at the border.

Import VAT in Denmark on goods from Turkey

Denmark applies import VAT on goods from outside the EU. The standard rate is reported as 25 percent, but the figure should be confirmed against current Danish tax guidance. VAT is calculated on the customs value plus freight and insurance to the EU border, so the transport invoice affects the declaration.

SMETRD does not give tax advice. A registered Danish importer should check its VAT status and any deferral options with an adviser before the first shipment.

How long does shipping from Turkey to Denmark take?

Planning ranges are about six to nine days for a full truckload, roughly twelve to twenty days for a container with North Sea transshipment, and one to three days by air. These are estimates, not guarantees. Border queues, driver rest periods, bans and port congestion can all move them.

SMETRD states the expected transit time for each shipment when it confirms the route, mode and departure date.

What affects freight rates Turkey to Denmark, and which Incoterm?

Rates depend on mode, weight and volume, pickup and delivery points, urgency and cargo type. For Denmark the long distance, German tolls, the Danish toll, bridge or ferry crossings and seasonal capacity add to the price. Incoterms such as FCA, DAP or DDP decide who pays which part.

Send the addresses, goods description, weight, dimensions and preferred Incoterm to receive a quote for the mode you choose.

Danish road rules: KmToll, low-emission zones and permits

Since January 2025 Denmark charges a distance-based truck toll (KmToll) for trucks of 12 tonnes and above on state roads and part of the municipal network. The charge depends on distance, weight and CO2 class, and extra fees apply in low-emission zones such as Copenhagen and Aarhus.

A government plan to extend the toll to lighter trucks from 2027 is only a stated intention. Turkish carriers also need bilateral and transit permits, and German and Austrian truck bans on Sundays and holidays affect the schedule. Check whether Denmark currently runs temporary border checks at Padborg.

Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Denmark

SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. Danish buyers need mill certificates for steel, REACH and CLP compliance with safety data sheets for chemicals and paint, and ADR papers where the goods are classed as dangerous. National enforcement is strict.

Read the wholesale trade page for product groups and how to request an offer, then combine the goods with the transport quote for one price from Istanbul to the delivery address.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Denmark?

A customs declaration is mandatory. You can lodge it yourself with an EORI number and the right knowledge, but most importers use a customs agent because mistakes in the HS code or value cause delays.

Is there a direct Ro-Ro or ferry from Turkey to Denmark?

A direct Ro-Ro service has not been confirmed. The usual pattern is a Ro-Ro leg to Trieste and then road, using the Puttgarden–Rødby ferry if the load goes to Zealand.

Can I ship less than a full truck from Turkey to Denmark?

Yes. Groupage lets you book pallets or loading metres on a shared trailer. Departures follow a consolidation schedule and transit is slower than a dedicated truck.

Is the cargo insured?

Carrier liability under the CMR convention is limited, so a separate cargo insurance policy is advisable for valuable goods. Ask for it when you request the quote.

Can I track my shipment from Turkey to Denmark?

Road shipments are normally followed through carrier milestone updates. Containers are tracked by container number and air cargo by air waybill number.

Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to Denmark?

Dangerous goods, certain chemicals, food and animal products, weapons and goods under EU sanctions or trade-defence measures have special rules. Tell us the goods and HS code before booking.
