Freight from Turkey to the Netherlands: Road, Sea and Air
The Netherlands is Europe's gateway for containers, so cargo from Turkey often lands in Rotterdam and moves on to Germany and Belgium, while trucks reach Dutch warehouses through Germany. SMETRD arranges freight to the Netherlands by road, sea and air and explains routes, charges and customs.
Turkey to the Netherlands freight forwarder: what SMETRD handles
SMETRD books road, sea and air freight from Istanbul and other Turkish origins to the Netherlands, prepares the transport documents and coordinates customs with a Dutch agent. Whether the destination is a Rotterdam terminal, a Venlo logistics park or a warehouse in the Randstad, one plan covers every step.
Dutch consignees frequently import on behalf of buyers elsewhere in the EU, so goods may continue to Germany or Belgium after clearance. Tell us the final destination early, because it can change the customs procedure.
Shipping from Turkey to the Netherlands: which mode fits your cargo?
Containers to Rotterdam fit heavy and regular-volume cargo, trucks through Germany suit pallets and full trailers with door delivery, air to Schiphol suits urgent and valuable consignments, and Rhine barge or rail from Rotterdam works for inland terminals. Choose by weight, deadline and destination.
Rotterdam receives Turkish cargo mainly as containers rather than ro-ro, so trailers usually come by road. A hybrid, such as sea to Rotterdam and a short truck leg to the warehouse, is common for steel and plastics.
Road freight Turkey to the Netherlands via Germany
Trucks leave Istanbul at Kapıkule or Hamzabeyli, cross Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria, then run through Munich, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Cologne before entering the Netherlands at Venlo, Emmerich-Elten or Arnhem on the way to Rotterdam or Amsterdam. Expect Germany to be the longest leg.
Forwarders quote six to ten days by road or by ro-ro and road, which we have not verified and treat as a planning range. The German–Dutch border is internal Schengen, so there are no routine checks.
Dutch road charges, Maut chain and Turkish haulier permits
A Dutch distance-based charge for heavy vehicles, vrachtwagenheffing, was planned from 2026, and we have not verified its start date or rate for foreign trucks. The route also carries German Maut, Austrian GO-Maut, Hungarian HU-GO, Romanian rovinieta and Bulgarian BGTOLL charges.
Turkish hauliers need bilateral Netherlands permits within a quota, plus transit permits, and cannot perform cabotage. Permit supply is limited, and 2026 numbers are not verified, so confirmation comes before the date is promised.
Sea freight Turkey to the Netherlands: Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Vlissingen
Rotterdam is Europe's largest port, and services from Ambarlı, İzmit, Gemlik and Mersin call there directly or via Piraeus, Valencia or Marsaxlokk. Amsterdam handles general cargo, steel and bulk, while Vlissingen in North Sea Port takes ro-ro, vehicles and feeder calls.
Aggregators quote about thirteen and a half days from İzmit to Rotterdam, while our wider planning range is twelve to twenty days port to port. Confirm the carrier and the transshipment point before fixing a date.
Container shipping Turkey to Rotterdam (FCL and LCL)
FCL gives you one 20 ft, 40 ft or high-cube container from your Turkish supplier to the Dutch receiver, while LCL shares a container consolidated in Turkey and unpacked in the Netherlands. FCL is the better choice for large steel and plastic volumes.
- Terminal pickup at Rotterdam and delivery by truck, barge or rail
- Customs release before or after leaving the terminal
- Demurrage and detention time agreed in the quote
Inland routes from Rotterdam: barge, rail and Venlo
After Rotterdam, containers can continue by Rhine barge or rail to Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, and inland terminals around Venlo and on the Betuwe line handle pre- and on-carriage. Port congestion in Rotterdam can influence which inland leg is best.
Pick the leg by delivery address and urgency. We quote barge and rail as alternatives to a truck, but availability and transit depend on terminal slots and water levels.
Air freight Turkey to the Netherlands: Schiphol and Maastricht
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main cargo hub, served by Turkish Cargo with belly and freighter capacity that we have not confirmed in detail, while Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) in the south focuses on freighters. One to three days is a planning estimate.
Air rates depend on chargeable weight, and the Netherlands has strong onward trucking from Schiphol to Germany and Belgium. State the final delivery address so the whole move is priced together.
Dutch customs clearance for goods from Turkey
Imports are declared to Dutch Customs (Douane) through its declaration systems by the importer or a customs agent holding an EORI number. Declarations use the invoice, packing list, transport document, tariff code, value and origin, and goods may move on under T1 or EAD transit under NCTS.
Rotterdam cargo is often declared for onward movement to another EU country, so the VAT and customs procedure should be agreed with the Dutch agent before the vessel arrives.
Customs duty, A.TR and EUR.1 for the Netherlands
Industrial goods from Turkey in free circulation enter the Netherlands duty-free under the EU–Turkey customs union with an A.TR certificate. The Dutch Chamber of Commerce notes that EUR.1 is needed for many agricultural goods and some steel to obtain duty relief.
Steel imports face the EU quota regime from 1 July 2026, with a 50 percent out-of-quota duty and melt-and-pour evidence. Dutch importers above 50 tonnes a year of CBAM goods need authorised declarant status through the Dutch customs authority.
Documents for a Turkey to Netherlands shipment
The basic file consists of a commercial invoice, packing list and a CMR, bill of lading or air waybill, with A.TR or EUR.1 and the importer's EORI number. Steel needs a mill certificate showing melt-and-pour origin, and chemicals and paint need safety data sheets and ADR papers.
- Commercial invoice, tariff code, Incoterm
- Packing list
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR or EUR.1
- T1 or EAD transit document where used
- Mill certificate, SDS, ADR papers
Dutch import VAT and Article 23 deferment
Import VAT in the Netherlands is charged at the standard rate of 21 percent. Importers holding an Article 23 licence can defer payment and account for it in their VAT return, a common route for Rotterdam gateway cargo. We have not verified licence details, so check them with a Dutch adviser.
Our role is transport, not tax. A clear freight invoice helps the Dutch customs agent calculate the value correctly.
How long does shipping from Turkey to the Netherlands take?
Planning ranges are about six to ten days for a truck or ro-ro plus road, twelve to twenty days port to port for containers, and one to three days for air cargo. These are indicative and depend on border queues, hub connections and terminal congestion.
| Mode | Planning range | Variable |
|---|---|---|
| Road via Germany | 6 to 10 days | Kapıkule, weekend bans, tolls |
| Container to Rotterdam | 12 to 20 days | Direct or via a hub |
| Air to Schiphol | 1 to 3 days | Capacity |
What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to the Netherlands?
Prices depend on mode, volume, pickup point in Turkey, Dutch delivery address, tolls across the route, fuel, terminal handling at Rotterdam, permits and season. There is no single published rate; SMETRD quotes on request after reviewing the cargo and the final destination.
Port-to-port container prices exclude inland haulage, so ask for door-to-door terms. Seasonal peaks in the Rotterdam region can add waiting time.
Incoterms and insurance on Turkey–Netherlands shipments
FCA, CPT and DAP work well for Dutch deliveries, with the seller handling Turkish export clearance and the buyer's Dutch agent handling import. For sea, FOB or CIF place the risk transfer at the Turkish port. Match the term to who books the vessel and who holds the cargo policy.
Containers handled at Rotterdam pass several parties, so record cargo condition at pickup. Cargo insurance supplements the limited carrier liability.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to the Netherlands
SMETRD trades steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. Dutch rules include CBAM and quotas for steel, REACH and CLP for chemicals with labels typically in Dutch, Decopaint VOC limits for paints, ADR and Seveso storage rules. Each group needs its own papers.
The wholesale trade page lists product groups and certificates. Combine the offer with the freight leg to Rotterdam or a Dutch warehouse for one delivered price.

Frequently asked questions
Which port is best for Turkish cargo to the Netherlands?
Rotterdam is the main gateway with the most services. Amsterdam suits some bulk and steel, and Vlissingen handles ro-ro and vehicles. The choice depends on cargo type and delivery address.
Can goods cleared in Rotterdam continue to Germany?
Yes, after import clearance or under transit, depending on the procedure you choose. Tell your agent the final destination so the right declaration is used.
Is there a Dutch toll for foreign trucks?
A distance-based charge was planned from 2026, but we have not verified the start date or rate. We confirm the current position at booking.
Do I need a Dutch customs agent?
Not legally, but most importers use one. With an EORI number you may lodge the declaration yourself if you know the procedure.
How do I get an Article 23 licence?
It is granted by the Dutch tax authority on application and allows VAT deferment on imports. Ask a Dutch tax adviser about requirements.
Can I send air freight to Schiphol and truck it onward?
Yes, onward trucking from Schiphol to Germany or Belgium is common. Include the delivery address in the quote so the whole move is priced together.
