Freight from Turkey to Belgium: Road, Sea and Air
SMETRD arranges road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to Belgium. Antwerp-Bruges, Liège and the Benelux motorway network make Belgium one of the busiest destinations for Turkish cargo in Western Europe. This page covers routes, ports, airports, customs papers and the points that most often change a quotation.
Freight from Turkey to Belgium: what SMETRD arranges
SMETRD plans and books transport from Istanbul and other Turkish origins to Belgian addresses: full truckloads, groupage, containers into Antwerp-Bruges and air cargo into Brussels or Liège. We also coordinate the customs steps, so the shipper and the Belgian consignee work from one plan instead of several carriers.
Belgium is a transit-heavy market. A pallet may be delivered in Flanders, collected by a buyer in Wallonia or continue to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, so the delivery address and the customs office of destination should be fixed before booking.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Belgium take?
As a planning range, a full truckload from Istanbul needs about five to eight days on the road, a container by sea roughly eight to fourteen days port to port, and air cargo one to three days door to door. These are estimates, not guarantees, and border queues or port congestion can move them.
The road figure assumes a distance of roughly 3,000 to 3,300 km plus waiting time at the Bulgarian entry point. SMETRD confirms the expected transit time for your own pickup date when the route and mode are agreed.
Road freight from Turkey to Belgium: route and transit
The usual truck route leaves Istanbul via Kapıkule, runs through Bulgaria and Serbia or Romania, then Hungary, Austria and Germany, and reaches Belgium past Cologne on the E40 towards Brussels or Antwerp. Hauliers choose between the Serbian and Romanian variants depending on queues and permits.
A second option is Ro-Ro from Turkey to Trieste, followed by road over the Brenner or via Tarvisio and Villach into Germany and the Benelux. That shortens driving time but depends on ferry schedules, which should be checked at booking.
Which border crossing do trucks use from Turkey to Belgium?
Trucks leave Turkey at Kapıkule into Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo, or at Hamzabeyli into Lesovo. After that, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Belgium are inside Schengen, so goods meet no routine checks at those borders. The only major goods formalities are at the Turkish exit and the first EU entry.
If the Serbian variant is chosen, the Serbian borders add an extra customs step, normally handled under T1 or TIR transit. Vehicles can still be stopped for roadside inspection anywhere in the Schengen area.
FTL and groupage (LTL) from Turkey to Belgium
A full truckload gives one shipper the whole trailer, which suits large consignments and sealed cargo. Groupage combines pallets from several senders on a scheduled truck and is cheaper per pallet for small volumes. For Belgium, groupage is often collected at a hub and distributed locally in Flanders and Wallonia.
Mention in the request whether the delivery site has a loading dock, a tail-lift or time slots. Antwerp and Brussels industrial areas often apply delivery windows that a long road journey can easily miss.
Sea freight from Turkey to Belgium: Antwerp-Bruges, Zeebrugge and Ghent
Antwerp-Bruges is the main Belgian gateway for containers and chemicals, Zeebrugge handles Ro-Ro and vehicles, and Ghent is used for steel and bulk. Containers from Ambarlı, Mersin or Izmir reach Antwerp directly or after transshipment at a Mediterranean hub such as Piraeus or Valencia.
Steel coils and project cargo can also travel as break-bulk from Gemlik, Iskenderun or Izmir to Antwerp or Ghent. A Ro-Ro leg to Trieste, Sète or Toulon followed by road is the alternative for trailers.
Container shipping Turkey to Belgium (FCL and LCL)
A full container load fills a 20 ft or 40 ft box for one shipper, while LCL shares a box and is consolidated at the Turkish port. Belgium has dense inland barge and rail links from Antwerp, so a container can continue to Brussels, Liège or Luxembourg without a long truck leg.
Ask for the container type, free time at the terminal and the inland haulage option in the same quotation. Return rules for empty boxes differ between shipping lines and affect the final cost.
Air freight from Turkey to Belgium: Brussels, Liège and Antwerp airports
Brussels Airport (BRU) is the pharma and general cargo hub, and Liège (LGG) is a major freighter airport that has grown strongly in 2026 according to published reports. Cargo from Istanbul flies on belly capacity or freighters and is billed on the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
Antwerp (ANR) and Charleroi (CRL) have only minor cargo roles. Whether Turkish Cargo flies a given day to Brussels or Liège should be checked when booking, because schedules change.
Which is the best way to ship from Turkey to Belgium?
Road works best for regular pallet flows and time-sensitive supply, because transit is predictable. Sea is the economical choice for heavy or bulky cargo headed for the Antwerp area. Air fits samples, spare parts and urgent orders. The right option depends on weight, urgency and where the goods end up.
For steel and plastics in large lots, sea into Antwerp-Bruges or Ghent is common. For chemicals, the port of Antwerp is also the place where inspections and paperwork are strictest.
Do I pay customs duty on goods from Turkey to Belgium?
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union can enter Belgium without customs duty when the right proof is presented. Steel and coal products fall outside the union and follow a separate arrangement, and EU trade-defence measures can still apply to specific steel products.
From 1 July 2026 the EU steel import regime uses quotas, a higher duty outside the quota and a melt-and-pour rule. The Turkish quota size is reported differently by different sources, so check the tariff code and current measure before fixing a purchase price.
Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Belgium
The core set is a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document: CMR for road, bill of lading for sea, air waybill for air. Belgian clearance also needs an EORI number. Depending on the goods, an A.TR or EUR.1 certificate, a T1 document and product certificates are added.
- Commercial invoice with HS codes, value and Incoterm
- Packing list with gross and net weights
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR for industrial goods, EUR.1 for steel
- EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate for steel
- Safety data sheet and ADR papers for chemicals and paint
- CBAM authorised declarant number where yearly volumes exceed 50 tonnes
A.TR or EUR.1: which certificate does my cargo need for Belgium?
A.TR proves that industrial goods are in free circulation within the customs union, which is the normal proof for plastics, chemicals and paint. Steel and other coal and steel products are handled under a separate arrangement and usually need EUR.1. A.TR shows circulation status and is not a proof of origin.
The Commission pages do not spell out the steel document in a single place, so confirm the form per tariff code with your Belgian broker. Choosing the wrong form is a common reason for duty being assessed after arrival.
Customs clearance and import VAT in Belgium
Goods from Turkey need an import declaration lodged with Belgian customs, normally through a customs agent in Antwerp or another entry point, or under T1 transit to an inland office. Import VAT is generally cited at 21 percent, and some importers can defer it to their periodic return, which should be confirmed with an adviser.
VAT is based on the customs value, which includes freight and insurance up to the EU border. SMETRD does not give tax advice, but the transport invoice is part of the declaration and should match the other documents.
Belgian road rules: Viapass, low-emission zones and permits
Trucks over 3.5 tonnes pay a distance-based charge, Viapass, on Belgian motorways and main roads. Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent run low-emission zones that restrict older diesel vehicles. Belgium has no general Sunday truck ban as far as we know, but transit through Austria and Germany does.
Turkish hauliers work under bilateral permits and cannot do cabotage inside Belgium. Quota numbers for 2026 have not been confirmed, so permit availability should be agreed with the carrier before a date is promised.
What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to Belgium?
Cost depends on the mode, weight, volume, pickup point, delivery address, urgency and cargo type. Fuel, tolls, border waiting time, port and terminal charges at Antwerp and seasonal capacity also matter. There is no single standard rate for the lane, so SMETRD prices each shipment on request.
The cheapest option on paper is rarely the cheapest in practice if it adds storage, demurrage or a second delivery attempt. Compare quotations on the same Incoterm and the same delivery point.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Belgium
SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For Belgium these goods carry extra paperwork: mill certificates and melt-and-pour evidence for steel, REACH and CLP compliance with safety data sheets for chemicals and paint, and ADR rules for dangerous goods.
Antwerp is Europe's major chemicals port, so documentation is checked carefully. Non-EU manufacturers usually need an Only Representative or the Belgian importer must register the substance itself.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Belgium?
A declaration is mandatory, and most importers appoint a customs agent because the HS code, value and origin statement must all be right. An EORI number is needed either way.
Is there a direct Ro-Ro from Turkey to Belgium?
We have not verified a regular direct Ro-Ro service to Belgium. Ro-Ro to Trieste, Sète or Toulon followed by road is the usual combined option, and its current schedule should be checked at booking.
Can I send less than a full truck from Turkey to Belgium?
Yes. Groupage lets you book pallets or part of a trailer. Departures follow a schedule, and transit is a little slower than a dedicated full truckload.
Is my cargo to Belgium insured?
Carrier liability under the CMR convention is limited, so a separate cargo policy is advisable for valuable goods. Ask for insurance when you request the quote.
Can I track a shipment from Turkey to Belgium?
Road shipments are followed through carrier updates, containers by container number and air cargo by air waybill number.
Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to Belgium?
Dangerous goods, certain chemicals, food and animal products, and goods under EU sanctions or trade-defence measures have special rules. Tell us the goods and HS code before booking.
