Freight from Turkey to France: Road, Sea and Air
France sits at the far western end of the Turkish road network, so a shipment from Istanbul usually crosses the Alps from Italy or the Rhine at Strasbourg. SMETRD arranges road, sea and air freight to France and explains routes, restrictions and customs before you ask for a price.
Turkey to France freight forwarder: how SMETRD works
SMETRD books trucks, containers and air cargo from Istanbul and other Turkish origins to French delivery addresses, prepares the transport papers and briefs the French consignee on customs. The plan names the route, the crossing points, the expected handover and who files each declaration.
France is one of the longest lanes on the Turkish network, so the choice of corridor matters more than on routes to the Balkans or Central Europe. We compare a continental road haul with a ro-ro leg to Italy before recommending one.
Shipping from Turkey to France: which mode fits your cargo?
A through truck serves pallets and full loads going to Lyon, Strasbourg or Paris, a container to Marseille-Fos suits heavy or bulky cargo for the south, a ro-ro leg to Italy followed by road can cut driving days, and air to Paris suits urgent goods. Deadline and cargo value decide.
For Mediterranean France, sea is often the shortest door-to-door route, while northern France is closer to a Rhine-corridor truck. Tell us the delivery department and we propose the cheaper of the plausible options.
Road freight Turkey to France: the Rhine and Alpine corridors
The overland route runs from Kapıkule through Bulgaria, Serbia or Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany, entering France at Kehl–Strasbourg or Saarbrücken–Forbach, then continues to Paris. The southern variant crosses northern Italy and enters France through the Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnels or at Ventimiglia.
Our planning range for a full truckload is six to nine days via the Balkans, an estimate that depends on queues. The Germany–France and Italy–France frontiers are Schengen internal borders, so checks are by spot inspection only.
Trieste ro-ro and road to Lyon or Marseille
Trailers can sail roll-on roll-off from Pendik or Ambarlı to Trieste and drive through northern Italy to Lyon, Marseille or beyond, saving the Balkan and Austrian borders. The planning range is six to eight days from Istanbul with road, an estimate subject to sailing dates.
Direct Turkey–France ro-ro connections have been thin and have changed repeatedly, so we confirm availability before quoting. Sète saw Yalova services in the past, and a DFDS rail link between Calais and Sète was set up to connect Turkey with northern France.
French weekend and summer truck bans
Goods vehicles of 7.5 tonnes and above are banned from 22:00 on Saturday to 22:00 on Sunday, with the same rule around public holidays. Summer Saturday bans between 07:00 and 19:00 apply on selected Saturdays in July and August. Dates need to be checked each season.
Aggregators list July and August 2026 dates, but we treat them as unverified. Marseille and Toulon also have weight-based city or tunnel restrictions from older sources. Plan the French arrival day to avoid waiting for a ban to end.
Tolls and permits: Turkish hauliers in France
French motorways are tolled by vehicle class. Turkish carriers need a bilateral road-transport permit for France and transit permits for countries on the route, within quotas, and cabotage is not allowed. Permit supply is a recurring constraint, which can steer a booking toward ro-ro and container options.
We have not verified the annual quota for France or whether regional heavy-vehicle charges, such as in Alsace, apply to your route. Give us the delivery address so toll exposure can be included.
Sea freight Turkey to France: Marseille-Fos, Le Havre, Sète and Dunkerque
Marseille-Fos is the main Mediterranean gateway with container lines from Turkey, Le Havre serves the Atlantic and northern markets usually after transshipment, Sète has a ro-ro and rail history, and Dunkerque handles ro-ro and container cargo in the north.
Planning ranges are seven to fourteen days to Marseille-Fos and fourteen to twenty-five to Le Havre, which we treat as estimates. Ask for a named service and cut-off date, since French ro-ro schedules from Turkey have changed repeatedly.
Container shipping Turkey to France (FCL and LCL)
A full container (FCL) is sealed at the Turkish factory or warehouse and opened at the French consignee, while LCL shares a box and is unpacked at a French container freight station. FCL is usually the better choice once cargo fills a large part of a 20 ft or 40 ft box.
- 20 ft: dense, heavy cargo such as steel products or granules
- 40 ft or high cube: volume cargo such as palletised goods
- LCL: small consignments, slower, consolidated at Marseille or Le Havre
Air freight Turkey to France: Paris CDG, Lyon and Marseille
Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is the main French cargo hub, with both belly capacity and freighters on the Istanbul route. Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS) and Marseille Provence (MRS) take regional cargo. Rates depend on chargeable weight, so measure cartons before you request a quote.
Turkish Cargo serves CDG, but we have not verified current capacity. One to three days is a planning estimate for airport-to-airport plus handling, not a guarantee.
French customs clearance on goods from Turkey
Imports are declared to French Customs (DGDDI) through the DELTA system as a DAE or DAU, supported by the invoice, packing list, transport document and the importer's EORI number. A customs agent normally lodges it, and goods may also arrive under transit and be cleared at an inland office.
Product certificates such as CE marking or REACH data are checked for some goods. Decide in advance who acts as declarant, because that role also determines who is liable for the duty and VAT figures.
Customs duty on goods from Turkey to France
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union enter France without customs duty when the A.TR or other proof is correct. Steel is different: from 1 July 2026 the EU quota regime applies, with a 50 percent duty beyond the quota and melt-and-pour evidence.
Turkey's country allocation has not been confirmed by us. CBAM has been in its definitive period since 1 January 2026, and French importers above 50 tonnes a year need authorised declarant status, with certificates due from February 2027.
A.TR or EUR.1 for France
Use A.TR for industrial goods: it proves free circulation under the customs union, is valid for four months and is endorsed by customs. EUR.1 covers ECSC steel and coal products and some basic agricultural goods. Neither replaces the commercial invoice, which carries the declared value.
Exporters usually obtain the A.TR through the Turkish customs administration or an authorised body. A wrong form can make the French side charge duty, so check the tariff code before the trailer leaves.
Documents for shipping from Turkey to France
The basic set is the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document, supported by an A.TR or EUR.1 certificate where needed and the French importer's EORI number. Chemicals and paints add safety data sheets, labelling data and, for dangerous goods, ADR papers.
- Commercial invoice, tariff code, Incoterm
- Packing list
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR or EUR.1
- EORI number
- Product certificates, SDS, ADR papers where applicable
French import VAT and deferment
French import VAT is levied at a standard rate of 20 percent on customs value, duty and freight to the first destination. Registered importers can often use autoliquidation, accounting for the VAT in their return instead of paying it at the border, subject to eligibility.
Confirm eligibility with a French accountant before the first shipment. We cannot advise on tax, but we can make sure the transport invoice supports the declared value.
How long does shipping from Turkey to France take?
Expect about six to nine days for a full truckload via the Balkans, six to eight days via Trieste ro-ro and road, one to two weeks by container to Marseille-Fos, and one to three days by air. These planning ranges are estimates and depend on queues and sailings.
| Route | Planning range | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Road via Austria and Germany | 6 to 9 days | Border queues, weekend bans |
| Trieste ro-ro plus road | 6 to 8 days | Sailing day |
| Container to Marseille-Fos | 7 to 14 days | Direct or transshipped |
| Air to Paris CDG | 1 to 3 days | Capacity |
What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to France?
Price is driven by distance, mode, load size, French and transit tolls, fuel, permits, ferry or port charges and weekend waiting caused by truck bans. No standard rate applies, so SMETRD quotes on request, itemising the sea or road legs for comparison.
Deliveries to Paris and Lyon price differently from Marseille because the sea option changes. Provide the delivery address and the goods weight to get a route-specific figure.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint into France
SMETRD trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. French rules to watch include EU quotas and CBAM for steel, REACH and CLP for chemicals, SCIP and biocide checks, ADR on the road and VOC labelling for paints and varnishes.
The wholesale trade page sets out product groups and certificates. We can combine the goods and the Turkey–France freight into one delivered-price offer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best route from Turkey to France by road?
It depends on the destination. Northern and eastern France are reached via Austria, Germany and Strasbourg, while the south is often reached through Italy. We compare corridors and ro-ro options when we quote.
Is there a direct ferry from Turkey to France?
Direct ro-ro services between Turkey and France have been limited and have changed repeatedly. We confirm current schedules with operators before quoting, and Trieste followed by road is a common alternative.
Can trucks drive in France at the weekend?
Goods vehicles of 7.5 tonnes and above are banned from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00, and on holiday weekends, with extra summer Saturday bans. Planning must account for them.
Do I need A.TR for France?
For industrial goods in free circulation, yes, to claim duty-free treatment. Steel and coal products usually need EUR.1 instead. Confirm per tariff code with your agent.
Which French port suits containers from Turkey?
Marseille-Fos is the usual Mediterranean choice. Le Havre serves the north and Atlantic side, generally after a transshipment. Confirm direct services with carriers.
Does paint exported to France need special documents?
Yes. Expect a safety data sheet, labelling to CLP rules, VOC information and, where classed as dangerous goods, ADR documents. Check French labelling requirements with the importer.
