Freight from Turkey to Spain: Road, Sea and Air

Spain is the Mediterranean partner at the far end of the lane: a truck from Istanbul crosses most of Europe, while a container sails straight across the sea. SMETRD arranges freight from Turkey to Spain by road, sea and air and explains what each option means for timing, customs and permits.

Turkey to Spain freight forwarder: what SMETRD arranges

SMETRD plans transport from Istanbul, Bursa, İzmir, Mersin and other Turkish origins to Spanish warehouses: full and part truckloads, containers, ro-ro combinations and air cargo. We prepare the transport papers and explain the Spanish customs steps so the cargo is released without avoidable waiting.

The overland distance to Barcelona is long, so most buyers weigh a truck through Italy and France against a Mediterranean container. Spain's strong container connectivity often makes sea the better answer for heavy cargo.

Shipping from Turkey to Spain: which mode fits your cargo?

Sea containers to Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras fit heavy, bulky or regular volume cargo, road suits pallets and trailers needing door delivery, ro-ro to Italy or France followed by road can cut driving time, and air to Madrid or Barcelona suits urgent goods and samples.

Ask yourself how fast the stock must arrive and how much it weighs. Textile and parts consignments with a seasonal deadline often go by road or air; steel, plastic granules and chemicals typically go by sea.

Road freight Turkey to Spain: the overland corridor

A truck leaves Istanbul through Kapıkule into Bulgaria, crosses Serbia or Hungary and Romania, passes Austria or Slovenia and northern Italy, then runs through France to enter Spain at La Jonquera or Irun. The overland planning range is eight to eleven days, an estimate.

This lane crosses five or six jurisdictions with transit permits for several of them, so border delays and driver-hour limits accumulate. Many Turkey–Spain flows therefore use a ro-ro leg to Italy or France to cut driving time.

La Jonquera and Irun: entering Spain from France

Trucks from Turkey enter Spain at Le Perthus–La Jonquera on the A9 and AP-7 towards Barcelona, or at Biriatou–Irun on the A63 and AP-8 towards the Basque Country and Madrid. This is a Schengen internal border with no routine customs check, though vehicles can be stopped.

La Jonquera carries heavy truck traffic, so plan arrival times away from peak hours. Catalonia and the Basque Country apply regional limits for heavy vehicles, which we check against the calendar for your delivery date.

Spanish tolls, truck restrictions and Turkish haulier permits

Spain charges tolls on autopistas such as the AP-7 and restricts vehicles above 7.5 tonnes on Sundays and holidays, with extra regional rules. Turkish hauliers need a Turkey–Spain bilateral or CEMT permit plus transit permits, and cannot do cabotage inside Spain.

We have not verified the restriction calendar or the 2026 permit quota. EU driving and rest-time rules and the smart tachograph apply along the whole route, which is another reason to plan realistic daily distances.

Sea freight Turkey to Spain: Valencia, Barcelona, Algeciras, Tarragona and Bilbao

Valencia is Spain's largest container port, Barcelona handles containers and vehicles, Algeciras is a major transshipment hub, Tarragona takes bulk and chemicals, and Bilbao serves the Atlantic north with steel and breakbulk. Turkish origins include Ambarlı, Mersin and İzmir. Choose by distance to your site.

A planning range is six to twelve days on a direct service and twelve to twenty with transshipment, estimates until a carrier schedule is confirmed. Pick the Spanish port nearest your warehouse to limit inland haulage.

İzmir to Tarragona ro-ro and other Mediterranean options

A press release described an İzmir–Tarragona ro-ro line operated by Ekol with a sailing time of about sixty hours, but we have not confirmed that the service is running today. Other options are ro-ro to Trieste, Bari or Toulon followed by a road leg through France.

  • İzmir to Tarragona: reported by an operator, status to be checked
  • Pendik or Ambarlı to Trieste or Bari, then road
  • Container from Ambarlı, Mersin or İzmir to Valencia or Barcelona

Container shipping Turkey to Spain (FCL and LCL)

FCL gives you a sealed 20 ft or 40 ft container from the Turkish supplier to the Spanish receiver, while LCL shares space and is consolidated at the origin port. FCL is cheaper per unit once cargo fills most of the box, LCL suits small, regular consignments.

Specify container type, weight and whether you need a reefer or open top. Inland delivery from Valencia or Barcelona, demurrage terms and the container return location should sit in the same quotation.

Air freight Turkey to Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Valencia

Madrid Barajas (MAD) is Spain's largest cargo airport and Barcelona El Prat (BCN) the second, Zaragoza (ZAZ) is a dedicated cargo airport used by fashion and retail shippers, and Valencia (VLC) handles regional cargo. Turkish Cargo flies to Madrid and Barcelona.

Frequencies are not verified. Airfreight is billed on chargeable weight; a transit of one to three days is an estimate. Plan trucking from the airport to the final address in the same booking.

Spanish customs clearance on goods from Turkey

Imports are declared on a DUA, the single customs document, through the Spanish tax and customs agency AEAT, with an advance entry summary filed before arrival. The importer's EORI number, the invoice, packing list and transport document support the declaration, and a customs agent usually lodges it.

Spanish clearance of sea cargo at Valencia or Barcelona is routine when the tariff code and value are consistent. Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla have special regimes and are not covered on this page.

Customs duty, A.TR and EUR.1 for Spain

Industrial goods from Turkey in free circulation enter Spain duty-free under the EU–Turkey customs union with the A.TR certificate; ECSC steel falls under a separate arrangement where EUR.1 is used, to be verified for each tariff code. Steel also faces EU quota rules from 1 July 2026.

Spain has a strong domestic steel industry, including ArcelorMittal and Celsa, so steel imports are closely watched. The Spanish ministry MITECO runs CBAM authorised-declarant registration for importers above the threshold.

Documents for a Turkey to Spain shipment

Prepare a commercial invoice, packing list and a transport document, plus A.TR or EUR.1 where relevant, and make sure the Spanish consignee holds an EORI number. Entry summary data is filed before arrival, and chemicals and paint add safety data sheets and ADR papers.

  • Commercial invoice with tariff code and Incoterm
  • Packing list
  • CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
  • A.TR or EUR.1
  • EORI number and advance entry data
  • Safety data sheets, ADR papers, mill certificates

Spanish import VAT on goods from Turkey

Import VAT in Spain is charged at the standard rate, which we list as 21 percent but have not re-verified, on the customs value plus duty and freight. VAT-registered importers can normally recover it. Confirm the current rate and any deferral with a Spanish adviser.

Our team does not advise on tax. Keep freight costs consistent with the customs value so the declaration and the commercial paperwork tell the same story.

How long does shipping from Turkey to Spain take?

Overland trucks take about eight to eleven days, ro-ro to Italy or France plus road six to nine days, direct containers six to twelve days and transshipped containers twelve to twenty, and air one to three days. These are estimates and depend on sailing days and queues.

What affects the cost of shipping from Turkey to Spain?

Costs depend on mode, load size, origin and destination, tolls through several countries, fuel, port and terminal fees, permits and season. The long overland route and the competitive container market make a flat rate impossible, so SMETRD quotes on request for the actual shipment.

Compare quotes that include inland haulage in Spain, since a cheap port-to-port rate can be offset by delivery charges. Ask us for an itemised breakdown.

Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Spain

SMETRD trades steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For Spanish buyers, steel faces the EU quota system and CBAM, chemicals follow REACH and CLP, road shipments of dangerous goods follow ADR, and paints fall under EU VOC rules.

Spanish ports see large volumes of chemicals and bulk cargo, so coordinate port handling and storage requirements in advance. The wholesale trade page lists product groups and how offers work.

Frequently asked questions

Is sea or road faster from Turkey to Spain?

It depends on the route. Overland trucks need roughly eight to eleven days; a direct container can be quicker port to port but needs time for loading and delivery. We compare both for your deadline.

Is there a ro-ro line from Turkey to Spain?

An İzmir–Tarragona service was reported by an operator, but we have not confirmed it is running. Ro-ro to Italy or France followed by road is the alternative.

Which Spanish port is best for containers from Turkey?

Valencia and Barcelona are the main gateways, and Algeciras is a transshipment hub. The best port is the one closest to your warehouse with a suitable service.

Can a Turkish truck deliver to several Spanish cities?

Multi-drop is possible within the permit rules, but a Turkish haulier cannot do cabotage inside Spain. Tell us the drops and we plan around the rules.

Do I need an EORI number in Spain?

Yes, the importer needs an EORI number to lodge customs declarations. A customs agent can also act for the importer, depending on the representation chosen.

Are there restrictions on chemicals shipped to Spain?

REACH, CLP and ADR apply, and some substances need extra authorisations. Send us the product name, CAS number and quantity before booking.
