Freight forwarder Turkey to Malta: how the lane works

Freight from Turkey to Malta combines a Turkish pickup with a sea or air crossing, because Malta has no land link. Sea is the default for containers and heavy goods, air serves urgent parcels, and trucks reach Malta only via Italy and a ferry. Customs clearance is handled under EU rules.

Malta sits in the central Mediterranean, so the lane is short on sea miles but depends on feeder schedules and transshipment connections.

Shipping from Turkey to Malta: sea, road with ferry, or air?

Sea freight into Marsaxlokk or Valletta suits most commercial cargo. Road with a Sicilian ferry suits trailer loads that need door delivery, though it adds handling and schedule risk. Air suits small, valuable or urgent goods. Compare weight, deadline and delivery address before choosing.

For recurring volumes of steel, plastics or paint, containers are normally the practical option. A trailer solution makes more sense when the cargo is already palletised for road.

Sea freight Turkey to Malta: Marsaxlokk and Valletta

Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk is a transshipment hub, and its container terminal is operated by the Turkish company Yilport. Valletta, the Grand Harbour, handles general cargo, Ro-Ro and ferries. Containers from Turkey usually go to Marsaxlokk, while breakbulk and trailers favour Valletta.

Turkish origin ports include Ambarlı, Gebze, Gemlik and Izmir Aliağa. Check the terminal and the free-day rules before booking the container.

Container feeders from Turkey to Malta (FCL and LCL)

Feeder services connect Turkish ports to Marsaxlokk, and a CMA CGM Turkey–Malta–Algeria service was announced in 2023, though schedules should be checked now. FCL fills a whole 20 ft or 40 ft container, while LCL is consolidated at Gemlik or Ambarlı and shares space.

Planning for port to port is commonly several days to under two weeks, plus the risk of a missed transshipment connection. This is an estimate, not a schedule.

Road freight Turkey to Malta via Italy and Sicily

A trailer leaves Istanbul through Kapıkule, crosses Bulgaria and Greece or boards a Ro-Ro to an Italian port, drives south through Italy to Sicily and then takes a ferry to Valletta. Turkish hauliers normally drop the trailer at a Sicilian or Italian port.

Final delivery on the island is made by local tractor units. A planning range of about one to two weeks has been reported, but ferry slots and Ro-Ro schedules have not been verified.

Ro-Ro and ferry options between Turkey, Italy and Malta

A direct Turkey–Malta Ro-Ro is not confirmed as current. The usual chain is a Turkish Ro-Ro to an Italian port such as Trieste, Ancona or Brindisi, a drive to southern Sicily and the Pozzallo–Valletta ferry. Capacity can tighten in peak season.

Book the Italian and Maltese legs together and ask for the ferry booking reference in writing. Freight capacity on the Pozzallo–Valletta crossing has not been verified.

Air freight Turkey to Malta: Malta International Airport

Malta International Airport (MLA) is the only cargo gateway. Istanbul to Malta passenger flights give belly capacity, and express operators also serve the island, but no major freighter hub is confirmed. Planning time is about one to three days via Istanbul or a European hub.

Air freight is charged on chargeable weight. Dangerous goods and temperature-controlled cargo should be checked against the airline's acceptance rules before the booking.

Customs clearance Turkey to Malta

Goods entering Malta need an import declaration lodged with Malta Customs, supported by the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. The importer needs an EORI number, and a customs agent can file on its behalf. Goods can also be held under customs suspension at the Freeport.

Freeport storage and transhipment can defer duty and VAT until release for free circulation. If you plan to use that route, say so when you ask for a quote.

EU–Turkey customs union: do you pay duty on goods from Turkey to Malta?

Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union can generally enter Malta without customs duty when the right proof is provided. Steel and agricultural products follow separate rules, and EU trade-defence measures can apply to specific steel lines.

From 1 July 2026 the EU steel regime applies, including quotas and a melt-and-pour requirement. Check the tariff code and the current measures before agreeing a buying price.

Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Malta

The core documents are the commercial invoice, packing list and a transport document: bill of lading for sea, air waybill for air, or CMR for the road leg. Add an A.TR or EUR.1, a T1 if goods move on from another EU port, and mill certificates for steel.

  • Commercial invoice with HS codes and Incoterm
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading, air waybill or CMR
  • A.TR for industrial goods or EUR.1 for steel
  • T1 transit if the goods move on from another EU port
  • Importer EORI number
  • Mill certificate with melt-and-pour for steel

A.TR or EUR.1 for Malta: which one applies?

A.TR supports duty-free entry of industrial goods in free circulation, while EUR.1 covers steel and some agricultural goods. The right form follows the tariff code, not the shipper, so match each invoice line to the certificate before departure to avoid duty being charged at Maltese customs.

Certificates are obtained in Turkey from customs or an authorised body. Keep the numbers on the invoice so the Maltese broker can quote them in the declaration.

Import VAT in Malta on goods from Turkey

Imports into Malta are subject to import VAT, collected at release for free circulation. The standard rate was not re-checked for 2026, so confirm it with a tax adviser. VAT is calculated on the customs value, which includes freight and insurance up to the Maltese border.

Goods stored at the Freeport under suspension only become taxable when they are released, which can help cash flow for stock that is re-exported.

How long does shipping from Turkey to Malta take?

As a planning range, a container on a feeder takes about five to twelve days port to port, a trailer via Italy and Sicily roughly a week or two, and air freight one to three days. Transshipment waits, ferry slots and customs checks can move these figures.

These are indicative, not guaranteed. The expected time is stated once routing and departure date are fixed.

What affects freight rates Turkey to Malta?

The mode, weight, volume, container type and the delivery point drive the price. Feeder capacity, Freeport handling, ferry fees and the season also matter, as do any dangerous goods surcharges. Because of these variables no single published rate exists for Turkey to Malta.

Ask for a quote with the loading address, delivery town in Malta, goods description, HS code, weight, dimensions and preferred Incoterm. A trailer and a container quote can be compared side by side.

Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Malta

SMETRD also trades steel, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. In Malta, steel needs mill certificates and melt-and-pour evidence, and CBAM guidance is published by the national climate authority. Chemicals and paint follow REACH and CLP, with IMDG for sea and ADR for road legs.

Label language rules for chemicals and paint should be verified with the Maltese consumer authority before the first order.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct Ro-Ro from Turkey to Malta?

A direct Turkey–Malta Ro-Ro is not confirmed as current. Trailers usually go through an Italian port and the ferry from Sicily to Valletta.

Which Maltese port should my container use?

Containers normally call at Marsaxlokk (Malta Freeport), while general cargo, Ro-Ro and breakbulk favour Valletta. Confirm the discharge port in the quotation.

Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Malta?

A declaration is mandatory. You can file it yourself with an EORI number, but most importers use an agent because HS code or value errors cause delays.

Can I ship less than a container to Malta?

Yes. LCL consolidation at Turkish ports lets you ship part of a container, with a slower, scheduled departure.

Is cargo insurance included?

No standard insurance is assumed. Carrier liability is limited, so ask for a separate policy when you request the quote.

Can I track a shipment to Malta?

Containers are tracked by container number, air cargo by waybill number and trailers through carrier milestone updates.
