Freight forwarder Turkey to North Macedonia: road, sea and air

SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to North Macedonia. The country is landlocked, outside the EU and outside the EU–Turkey customs union, so goods are cleared at its own border under a bilateral free trade agreement. This page explains the corridors, the gateway ports and the paperwork.

Freight forwarder Turkey to North Macedonia: what the quote covers

A forwarder plans transport, books the carrier and prepares the documents for each border. For Turkey to North Macedonia, SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul, with the route through Bulgaria or Greece, the transit procedure and the clearance at the Macedonian border.

North Macedonia is an EU candidate, not a member. It is outside Schengen, so goods are cleared by its own customs administration.

Shipping from Turkey to North Macedonia: why road dominates

Road is the main mode, because Skopje lies about two to four days from Istanbul by truck. Sea freight must go through a foreign gateway such as Thessaloniki and then continue by truck. Air freight to Skopje is possible but limited, and is used for small, urgent or high-value shipments.

Landlocked status means any sea shipment adds a transfer, so most Turkish goods travel on one truck from loading to delivery.

Road freight Turkey to North Macedonia: Corridor 8 via Bulgaria

The common route leaves Istanbul by Kapıkule and Kapitan Andreevo, passes Svilengrad and Sofia, and reaches Kyustendil to cross into North Macedonia at the Deve Bair or Kriva Palanka direction. From there Corridor 8 leads through Kumanovo to Skopje. Crossing names should be confirmed before dispatch.

Border capacity and the exact crossing used by trucks were not verified, so ask the carrier which point is planned and what customs office will handle the load.

Road freight via Greece: Corridor 10 and Gevgelija

The alternative runs from İpsala to Kipoi in Greece, then Thessaloniki, and enters North Macedonia at Evzoni and Bogorodica, followed by Gevgelija and Corridor 10 to Skopje. It is useful when the Bulgarian route is congested or when cargo has first been brought to Thessaloniki by sea.

Greek transit adds its own permit and tariff questions for Turkish carriers, so check the permit position for the planned route.

FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to North Macedonia

A full truckload gives one shipper the whole trailer, sealed once and delivered to the Macedonian address in a short planning window. Groupage consolidates pallets from several senders, often at an Istanbul or Skopje terminal, and fits regular small supplies. Customs papers must be prepared for every consignment.

Because each groupage consignment needs its own declaration at the Macedonian customs office, document accuracy matters more than on EU lanes.

Permits and transit rules for Turkish trucks

Turkish carriers need a valid road permit for each country on the route. The bilateral Turkey–North Macedonia permit status and quota were not verified, and Bulgarian or Greek transit permits are separate. Bulgaria applies EU rules, including the Mobility Package and electronic road charging.

Ask the carrier to state which permit it will use for each border. Without it, the truck can be refused at entry.

Sea freight Turkey to North Macedonia via Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki in Greece is the practical sea gateway for North Macedonia, about 230 km from Skopje on Corridor 10. Containers sail from Ambarlı, İzmir or Mersin and continue by truck. Durrës, Burgas and Varna are possible alternatives, but their use for this lane was not verified.

Plan three to eight days for the sea leg plus one to two days inland. These are estimates, and port congestion can change them.

Containers and Ro-Ro to North Macedonia

FCL containers fill a 20 ft or 40 ft box for one shipper, while LCL shares one. In both cases the container is discharged in Greece, cleared for transit and moved to a Macedonian customs terminal. Ro-Ro from Gemlik or İzmit to Thessaloniki may exist, but its status was not verified.

Ask for a quote that includes port handling in Thessaloniki, the transit declaration and the truck leg to Skopje.

Air freight Turkey to North Macedonia: Skopje and Ohrid

Skopje International Airport (SKP) is the main airport, and Turkish Airlines and Pegasus serve it from Istanbul, though schedules were not verified. Ohrid is seasonal with negligible cargo. Air shipments move through Istanbul on belly capacity and are planned at two to four days door to door.

Air freight is billed on chargeable weight. Ask for acceptance of dangerous goods and temperature-controlled cargo before booking.

Customs clearance Turkey to North Macedonia

North Macedonia is outside the EU, so every consignment needs a single customs declaration lodged with the Macedonian Customs Administration, usually by a licensed agent, supported by the invoice, packing list and transport document. Goods crossing Bulgaria or Greece travel under TIR or T1 transit to the Macedonian office.

Customs administration there is aligning with the EU, so formats look familiar, but the procedures remain national.

Duty on goods from Turkey to North Macedonia: the FTA

The EU–Turkey customs union does not apply. Instead, a bilateral free trade agreement in force since 2000 gives duty-free entry for originating industrial goods on proof of origin, with exceptions listed in an annex. A.TR is not used, and the exact origin form accepted should be confirmed.

Check the tariff code against the annex before pricing, because some products are excluded from the preference.

Documents needed to ship from Turkey to North Macedonia

Prepare a commercial invoice, packing list and transport document, plus the proof of origin required for the tariff preference. A certificate of conformity may be needed for regulated goods. Steel shipments should carry mill certificates, and chemicals and paint need safety data sheets in Macedonian where expected.

  • Commercial invoice with HS code, value and Incoterm
  • Packing list
  • CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
  • EUR.1 or other origin proof under the FTA (form to be confirmed)
  • TIR carnet or T1 transit document
  • Mill certificate, conformity or safety data documents

Import VAT in North Macedonia on goods from Turkey

Import VAT in North Macedonia is charged at a standard rate reported as 18 percent, which should be reconfirmed with the customs administration. The base includes the customs value plus transport and insurance costs to the border. The importer or the declarant pays it when the goods are released.

SMETRD does not give tax advice. Ask a local broker for rules on reduced rates and deferral.

How long does shipping from Turkey to North Macedonia take?

Planning ranges are two to four days for a full truckload by road, three to eight days for the sea leg to Thessaloniki plus one to two days inland, and two to four days by air via Istanbul. These are estimates only. Border queues and customs checks at either side can extend them.

The expected time is stated in the quote once the route and departure date are confirmed.

What affects freight rates Turkey to North Macedonia?

Mode, weight, volume, collection and delivery points, urgency and cargo type decide the rate. For this lane, waiting at the Turkish–Bulgarian border, permit availability, tolls on the Bulgarian leg and return-load availability from Skopje also count. There is no standard rate, so quotes are made per shipment.

FCA, DAP and DDP are used. DDP places clearance on the seller, so check who holds a Macedonian customs representative.

Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to North Macedonia

SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. EU steel quotas and CBAM do not apply to a direct delivery, but Macedonian tariffs, labelling and conformity rules do. Chemicals need safety data sheets, ADR papers apply for dangerous goods, and the local rules are close to the EU model.

The wholesale trade page lists the product groups. Goods and transport can be quoted together to the Macedonian address.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to North Macedonia?

In practice yes. The declaration is lodged with the Macedonian Customs Administration, usually through a licensed agent, and non-EU rules differ from those inside the EU.

Is there a direct Ro-Ro or ferry from Turkey to North Macedonia?

The country is landlocked, so there is none. Sea cargo is discharged at Thessaloniki or another gateway and continues by truck.

Can I ship less than a full truck from Turkey to North Macedonia?

Yes. Groupage lets you book pallets or loading metres with a scheduled departure, and each consignment needs its own customs documents.

Is the cargo insured?

CMR liability is limited, so separate cargo insurance is advisable for valuable goods.

Does A.TR apply to shipments to North Macedonia?

No. A.TR belongs to the EU–Turkey customs union. A bilateral free trade agreement applies, and the proof of origin form should be confirmed with the broker.

Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to North Macedonia?

Dangerous goods, some chemicals, food and animal products, weapons and regulated goods have special rules. Tell us the goods and HS code before booking.
