Freight forwarder Turkey to San Marino: how the lane works

Every shipment to San Marino passes through Italy. The republic is an enclave with no port, airport or railway, so freight is cleared at an Italian entry point and delivered to the Rimini area and into San Marino. A customs union with the EU governs the formalities.

San Marino is not part of the EU VAT area, so the consignee also handles local import formalities after Italian clearance.

Shipping from Turkey to San Marino: which mode fits?

Road, often combined with Ro-Ro to Trieste or Ancona, is the main option for pallets and full loads. Sea containers via Ravenna or Ancona suit heavy goods. Air goes through Bologna and a truck leg. Choose by weight, urgency and how close the consignee is to the Adriatic coast.

For steel, plastics, chemicals and paint, trucks are the usual choice. Containers via Ravenna are sensible when volumes are large.

Road freight Turkey to San Marino via the A14

Trucks cross Bulgaria, Serbia or Romania and Hungary, then Croatia and Slovenia to Trieste, and follow the Italian A14 Adriatic motorway to Rimini and San Marino. A planning range of five to eight days applies by land. Via Ro-Ro to Trieste or Ancona, road time afterwards is about four to six days.

There is no separate checkpoint between Italy and San Marino for goods already cleared into the EU, so the border stop is mostly administrative.

Italian road rules on the way to San Marino

On the Italian leg, heavy trucks face weekend and holiday driving bans on motorways and pay tolls on the A14. Turkish hauliers need an Italian permit, CEMT authorisation or bilateral authorisation to enter Italy. San Marino has no separate permit regime found, and the final stretch is a last-mile delivery.

Ask the carrier which permit covers Italy and how the Sunday restrictions affect your loading date.

FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to San Marino

FTL books a full trailer for one shipper and is sealed once. Groupage combines several shippers on one truck and suits smaller flows to Sammarinese buyers, using Italian consolidation near Rimini. Scheduled departures and separate customs data per consignment are the trade-offs.

Mixed loads containing paint or chemicals should be declared before consolidation so dangerous goods rules are respected.

Ro-Ro Turkey to Trieste and Ancona for San Marino

Trieste is the main Turkey–Italy Ro-Ro hub, with lines from Pendik and Ambarlı operated by DFDS and other groups, and Pendik to Bari is also reported. Grimaldi has run Trieste–Turkey services. From the port, a truck drives the A14 to Rimini. Schedules need to be checked at booking.

Ro-Ro avoids the long Balkan drive, but total time depends on the sailing date, so compare it with the pure road route.

Sea freight Turkey to San Marino: Ravenna, Ancona and Trieste

San Marino is landlocked, so containers are discharged at an Italian port. Ravenna, about a hundred kilometres away, handles steel, breakbulk and containers, Ancona offers Ro-Ro and containers, and Trieste is the main Turkey hub. Customs clearance happens in Italy before onward delivery.

Ambarlı, Mersin and Izmir are origin ports. Planning is six to twelve days to Ravenna or Ancona including feeders, as an estimate.

Container shipping Turkey to San Marino (FCL and LCL)

FCL fills a 20 ft or 40 ft container for one shipper, while LCL shares one container consolidated at the Turkish port. The container is discharged in Italy, cleared under EU rules and trucked into San Marino, so the quote should name the discharge port and the trucker.

Port handling, haulage to the Sammarinese address and container return terms should be in the same quotation.

Air freight Turkey to San Marino: Bologna and Rimini airports

San Marino has no airport. Bologna Marconi (BLQ), about 130 kilometres away, is the main cargo option, Rimini Fellini (RMI) lies roughly ten kilometres from the border but has limited cargo, and Forlì is small and regional. Planning is two to four days including trucking from Bologna.

Air freight is billed on chargeable weight. Use it for urgent parts, samples and valuable goods.

Customs clearance Turkey to San Marino

Goods are declared to Italian customs, often under a T1 transit, and San Marino import formalities follow for the consignee. The invoice, packing list and transport document support the declarations. Customs-union origin statements of the T2L type may be used in practice.

Confirm with a broker which of the two declarations is lodged where, since duties and the local import tax follow separate procedures.

EU–San Marino customs union: duty on goods from Turkey

San Marino is in a customs union with the EU, so the EU common external tariff applies, and Turkish goods with an A.TR or EUR.1 move under the EU–Turkey regime when cleared into EU free circulation. No direct Turkey–San Marino trade agreement was found.

Coal and steel products are reported as exceptions to the union. Verify the treatment of steel with a customs broker, and check the EU steel regime of July 2026 and CBAM for Italian entry.

Documents needed to ship from Turkey to San Marino

Prepare a commercial invoice, packing list and CMR, bill of lading or air waybill, plus an Italian customs declaration or T1, a San Marino import declaration for the consignee and, where relevant, A.TR or EUR.1. Customs-union origin statements may be required. Steel needs mill certificates.

  • Commercial invoice with HS codes and Incoterm
  • Packing list
  • CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
  • Italian customs declaration or T1 transit
  • San Marino import declaration for the consignee
  • A.TR or EUR.1 where applicable
  • Mill certificate for steel, SDS for chemicals and paint

Import tax in San Marino on goods from Turkey

San Marino is outside the EU VAT area and has its own import tax, introduced in 2020. The rate recalled from memory was not verified, so confirm it with a local adviser. The tax is calculated on the customs value, including freight and insurance, so the transport invoice should show them separately.

SMETRD does not give tax advice. Check how import tax is settled when goods are first cleared in Italy.

How long does shipping from Turkey to San Marino take?

Planning ranges are five to eight days by road, six to twelve days to Ravenna or Ancona by container, and two to four days by air including trucking. Via Ro-Ro to Trieste or Ancona and road, add four to six days. All are estimates and sailing dates or border queues can alter them.

The expected time is confirmed once route and departure date are fixed.

What affects freight rates Turkey to San Marino?

The mode, weight and volume, the Italian gateway and the last-mile delivery drive the price. Italian tolls, permits, port charges, Ro-Ro slots, fuel and seasonal demand also matter. No fixed price applies to Turkey to San Marino, so quotes are made per shipment.

Send the pickup address, San Marino delivery address, goods description, HS code, weight, dimensions and the Incoterm you plan to use.

Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to San Marino

SMETRD also trades steel, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For steel, the customs-union exception for coal and steel products should be verified, and the EU steel regime and CBAM apply at Italian entry. San Marino is not in the EU, but goods routed through Italy follow EU chemicals rules.

Local chemicals rules in San Marino were not verified. Ask the consignee which SDS language and labels it needs.
