Freight forwarder Turkey to Ireland: road, sea and air
SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul to Ireland. Ireland is an island in the EU, so every road load needs a ferry, and the UK land bridge now brings British customs into the picture. This page explains the options, the Irish ports and the import steps.
Freight forwarder Turkey to Ireland: what a quote covers
A forwarder plans the transport, books the carriers and ferry, and prepares the customs documents. For Turkey to Ireland, SMETRD prepares quotations for road, sea and air freight from Istanbul, and the quote shows the continental port, the ferry leg to Ireland, the customs office and the papers you need.
Ireland is in the EU but outside Schengen, uses the euro and drives on the left. Irish Revenue is the customs authority.
Shipping from Turkey to Ireland: which mode fits your cargo?
Road plus ferry suits pallets and trailers that must arrive in a predictable window. Sea containers through Rotterdam, Antwerp or Zeebrugge suit heavy goods that are not urgent. Air into Dublin suits samples, spare parts and high-value items, although belly capacity from Istanbul is limited.
Choose the mode after checking the delivery address: Dublin, Cork and Rosslare each have different onward trucking.
Road freight Turkey to Ireland: continental route and ferry
The common route leaves Istanbul via Kapıkule, crosses Bulgaria, Serbia or Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany, then reaches a Channel or North Sea port in Belgium or France. From there a ferry sails to Rosslare or Dublin. Total travel including the crossing is planned at roughly seven to eleven days.
Trucks entering the EU use Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo or İpsala–Kipoi. The sea crossing means a fixed ferry booking, so a missed slot adds a full day or more.
Direct ferries to Ireland versus the UK land bridge
Since Brexit, the UK land bridge from Calais to Dover and on to Holyhead or Liverpool adds British customs formalities and is not recommended for goods in EU customs status. Direct ferries such as Zeebrugge–Rosslare and Dunkirk–Rosslare avoid the UK and keep the load inside the EU system.
Departure frequency on the direct routes is limited, and operators change timetables. Confirm space before agreeing the delivery date.
FTL and groupage (LTL) Turkey to Ireland
A full truckload keeps one shipper's cargo sealed from Istanbul to the Irish consignee, which is simpler across a ferry crossing. Groupage combines smaller lots and is usually transferred at a continental hub before the Irish leg, so schedules are fixed by weekly consolidation.
Unaccompanied trailers are common on the Irish Sea and North Sea ferries and can be cheaper than moving the tractor unit.
Turkish trucks and Irish deliveries: the permit question
Ireland is reported to have no bilateral road transport agreement with Turkey, so Turkish-registered trucks generally cannot deliver there on a bilateral permit. Irish deliveries are normally made by EU-registered carriers or by transferring the trailer at a continental port. Check the current position before booking.
The information comes from a Turkish study of EU permit quotas and may be outdated. Transit permits for countries on the European leg still apply to Turkish carriers.
Sea freight Turkey to Ireland: Dublin, Cork and Rosslare
Dublin Port is the largest Irish port for ro-ro and lo-lo traffic, Cork serves the south coast and Rosslare Europort has direct ro-ro links to the continent. Turkish containers normally go from Ambarlı or Mersin to Rotterdam, Antwerp or Zeebrugge and continue on a feeder or ro-ro service.
A direct Turkey–Ireland liner service is not known. The alternative is Ro-Ro from Turkey to Trieste or Sète, then road across France or Belgium to the ferry.
Container planning for Ireland (FCL and LCL)
An FCL container fills a 20 ft or 40 ft box for one shipper, while LCL shares space and is consolidated at the origin port. Two transshipments are common for Ireland, so allow for transhipment risk, inland haulage from Dublin or Cork and the empty return. Typical planning is eighteen to thirty days.
Ask the forwarder to put container free time, terminal charges and haulage in the same quote.
Air freight Turkey to Ireland: Dublin and Shannon
Dublin Airport is the main cargo airport, with Istanbul connections whose frequency should be checked at booking. Shannon in the west handles freighter and transatlantic traffic. Because belly capacity is limited, many shipments route through a European hub and arrive in one to three days.
Airlines charge on chargeable weight. Mention batteries, liquids and temperature needs early, as acceptance rules differ between carriers.
Customs clearance Turkey to Ireland
Goods entering Ireland need an import declaration through the Irish Revenue customs system, supported by the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. The importer needs an Irish EORI number, which starts with IE. A load may be cleared at the first EU port or under transit at the Irish office.
If the load crosses Britain, expect British export, transit and import formalities in addition. That is the main reason to prefer the direct ferries.
Customs duty and CBAM on goods from Turkey to Ireland
Industrial goods in free circulation under the EU–Turkey customs union generally enter Ireland without customs duty when the correct proof is provided. Steel and coal sit under a separate arrangement. Irish importers above the CBAM threshold need authorised declarant status for covered products such as steel.
The EU steel regime from July 2026 uses quotas and melt-and-pour evidence, and the Turkey-specific quota was not confirmed. Check these rules before fixing a price.
Documents needed to ship from Turkey to Ireland
Prepare a commercial invoice, packing list and transport document, plus a movement certificate and conformity papers where required. Ferry operators also ask for driver identification, because Ireland is outside Schengen and passport or ID checks take place on arrival by sea.
- Commercial invoice with HS codes, value and Incoterm
- Packing list
- CMR, bill of lading or air waybill
- A.TR or EUR.1 where applicable
- Irish EORI number of the importer
- Ferry booking reference and driver ID for the sea crossing
A.TR, EUR.1 and import VAT in Ireland
A.TR shows free circulation for industrial goods, and EUR.1 covers steel and coal under the separate agreement. Ireland charges import VAT, with a standard rate of 23 percent. Registered importers may use postponed accounting, which lets them account for import VAT on their return rather than paying it at the border.
SMETRD does not give tax advice. Check eligibility for postponed accounting with Irish Revenue or an adviser.
How long does shipping from Turkey to Ireland take?
Planning ranges are about seven to eleven days for a full truckload including the ferry, eighteen to thirty days for a container with transshipment, and one to three days by air. They are estimates, not promises. Ferry space, border waits, German truck bans and port congestion can extend them.
The quote states the expected transit for the route and week you choose.
What affects freight rates Turkey to Ireland?
The mode, weight and volume, pickup and delivery points, urgency and cargo type decide the rate. For Ireland, the ferry crossing, tolls on the continental leg, seasonal capacity and any trailer repositioning also count. A fixed standard price for the lane does not exist, so quotes are made per shipment.
DAP and FCA are practical Incoterms for road traffic. Send the addresses, goods description, weight and dimensions with your request.
Steel, plastics, chemicals and paint to Ireland
SMETRD also trades iron and steel products, plastic raw materials, chemicals and paint. For Irish buyers, steel needs mill certificates and CBAM data, while chemicals and paint need REACH and CLP compliance, safety data sheets in English and ADR or IMDG papers when classed as dangerous.
Read the wholesale trade page for product groups and combine goods and transport in one quotation to the Irish delivery point.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customs broker to import from Turkey to Ireland?
A customs declaration is required, and many importers use a broker because the Irish system and the possible UK leg need practised handling. You need an EORI number either way.
Is there a direct Ro-Ro or ferry from Turkey to Ireland?
A direct Turkey–Ireland service is not known. Loads usually travel by road or Ro-Ro to the continent and then use a direct ferry such as Zeebrugge or Dunkirk to Rosslare.
Should the load go through the UK land bridge?
It is possible, but it adds British customs formalities and is not recommended for goods in EU customs status. Direct ferries from the continent keep the shipment inside the EU.
Can I ship less than a full truck from Turkey to Ireland?
Yes. Groupage combines pallets from several shippers, but it follows a weekly schedule and includes a transfer at a continental hub.
Is the cargo insured?
CMR liability is limited and a ferry adds exposure, so separate cargo insurance is advisable for valuable goods.
Which goods are restricted when shipping from Turkey to Ireland?
Dangerous goods, certain chemicals, food and animal products, weapons and goods under EU sanctions or trade-defence measures have special rules. Share the goods description and HS code before booking.
